GI vs. Full length guide rod?

I have a loaded speingfield 1911, i had a GI before with the regular OG guide rod and barrel plug.

If i swapped my full length guide rod on my new loaded springfield 1911 to a GI style guide rod will there be any issues?

No. The 1911 is designed to run correctly with the GI style guide rod.

You’ll be ok, every 1911 I’ve bought with a FLGR has been switched to a GI. Often before I’ve even fired it.

Swap the spring plug also and you are good to go.

There really is no advantage to a FLGR unless you plan on swapping uppers...I suppose they are a bit 'slicker' feeling, but functionally there isn't much of a difference.

If 2 piece, yes, it could. If one piece, nothing to come loose

I have a SA Loaded as well. I run the 2 piece guide rod and it functions fine with it as set up from the factory. No need to change it. Why change it?

I hate to carry an allen wrench around to disassemble it.

I converted mine to standard. Love it. Hated the full length guide rod when cleaning came.

There are SA Loadeds that use the G.I. guide rod and plug, such as the MC Operator. I own both a Parkerized Loaded that had the 2-pc stainless FLGR and an MC Operator. I like the guide rod setup on the MCO so I called Springfield and had them send me a G.I. guide rod and plug, two standard MSH, two standard hammer spring setups and two recoil springs for these guns.

Now they're twins (with the exception of the finish and the half-rail).
