    Colt Python? Color me unimpressed

I'm 61 years old, and have been shooting pistols since I was 18. In all that time I've never shot a Colt Python.

I've admired them, their styling, their build quality, their deep blue finish.

Well, I got to fire my buddy's 4 inch Python this week. He bought it new in the 90's, and it's still like new.

It's nice, but it's nowhere near as smooth as my smithed up S&W 627. As I said, color me unimpressed.

    Is it all hype?

Comparing a stock pistol to your "smithed up" SW? Not exactly a fair comparison is it?

It isn't hype. They were incredible handguns back in the day. They ticked like a Swiss watch and the Royal Blue finish was second to none. It was the finest pistol out of the box. Times have change though.

And yeah, the Python doesn't need a smith to tune it up. The Python was top notch quality out of the box.

IMO Pythons are only popular (read expensive) because of TWD.

Personally I prefer a S&W K,L, or N frame any (and every) day of the week.

The Python of the mid 80's and newer are not the same quality as the earlier models. The trigger feels totally different to me. You definitely have to feel a Python in the 60's an 70's to really appreciate the quality work that went into them. Much smoother and lighter trigger.

But like most people say, the S&W 686 is a better revolver and once you get a trigger job, it will be better than a Python. However, no one can deny that the Colt's Royal Blue finish is amazing.

Agreed, the best I've ever seen.

I feel the same way about the Colt Gold Cup National Match 1911. Totally not impressed with fit and finish but for some strange reason, there are so many people who rant and rave how great they are. Maybe they never felt a Les Baer, Dan Wesson or some other semi-customs.

I'm an S&W guy, and used to feel the same way until I spent a little more time with a Python from the 70's. The trigger pull is definitely different -- feels more elastic than a Smith. Then I bought a second....then a Colt Trooper, a Colt .357 (4-digit serial), and a Colt Police Positive. All have the same action.

If forced to choose I will choose S&W but I love those Colts. I find them pleasing still all the same.

For the cost of a Python today...you can buy a 586, tune the action, send it to Turnbull, and still have some money left for plinking ammo.

I understand the nostalgia and the history, but I'm not a collector so I'm not going to spend the money on a Python.

Well, maybe they're popular because of "Magnum Force" and "Starsky & Hutch."

They do have a nice look to them, but not something I'd pay for.
