    Night sight, simple experiment

I found that when you deploy night sights on a handgun sights with a flash light to identify your target in a dark room your night sight glow cannot be seen. Just the outline of your sights can be seen. Raises question what good are glowing sights if you can't see them when you turn on your flashlight to identify what you think is a threat in a dark room situation. Anybody else tried this experiment. What was your results.

Yes, I tried it. Even in moderately dim room where you can't see well enough to identify your subject, the night sights get washed out. All you see is the silhouette. IMHO, no need for night sights, no matter how awesome they are or who endorses them. Use of a good light surpasses NS no matter what.

Actually, there's a few good reasons to have night sights.

If said target is in a lit location and you're in the dark like if someone where burglarizing your home and you've just awaken in your darkened room...

Or you're out at night and there's enough ambient light (full moon, street lights etc) to identify the target but it's dark enough that you need the tritium as reference points. Aka walking to your car after a night at the movies or mall or even a nice walk on the beach etc.

Or you use just enough light that you can illuminate your target but you don't throw a wall of light (XC1 v TLR HL).

Or you run fiber optic/tritium sights like the HiViz H3 or Truglo TFOs and you throw that wall of light, the reflected light will light up your fiber optic pipes.

Good job trying your gear out in different conditions.

I’ll agree that night sights are great in places like a parking garage

You can identify and articulate a threat
You do get help finding the front sight

Night sights are also normally steel and should your pistol have plastic sights, well these will be marginally stronger
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Anyone out there try this with a fiber optic front sight? I'm thinking of replacing my glock 30sf standard white dot front sight with a fiber optic front sight.

I noticed that while trying out night sights. If you're using a light, night sights are not necessary.

They can also help locate your pistol in the dark. When you are awakened, they will appear very bright, and its easy to access it in the dark.

Have TruGlo on a Kahr, I can still see glow of sights in the dark using flashlight, but glow is dimmer.

Have SD9VE with Hi Viz sights, red rear/green front, the front sight does light up in dark when using flashlight, glow from front sight is brighter than TruGlo with flashlight on.

Night sights are for low light, if you have a light you are not in a low light situation any longer.

No sight is perfect for every situation, fiber optic is not made for low light shooting and does not work with directional light. It needs light on it to work, it is also much too fragile for a duty/carry gun in my opinion.

Just another shinning object to distract you from proper training & stone reliable equipment & creditable legal advise.

I agree proper training is essential, but have you tried night sights? Hardly "shining" in my experience.

I was actually shooting at night using my weapon light when it went flying off in the middle of my magazine dump. When the weapon light hit the ground, it turned itself off. Fortunately I didn't miss a beat by transitioning to my night sights.

Well, I might have missed a beat or two until my vision adjusted to the weapon light being missing.

But I would've been toast had I not had those night sights.

Night Sights, NS, are not a high priortiy for me.

I have tried night sights, sure.

Better men than me say NS tend to 'wash-out' on brightly colored objects under well lighted conditions. And since NS aren't designed or meant
to illuminate the target for proper identification under low light conditions, I tend to rank the importance of having NS lower than most hobby
shooters such as myself often times do.

Shooting accurately under low light conditions is a priority for me personally. That means having a high level of shooting skills
under ideal light conditions first is paramount over a lot of other pistol attachments including but not limited to NS.

                              Example:
Prowess at reloading a semiauto without loosing the grip on your unattached flashlight or your pistol under any conditions is more
important to me than having NS.

It is easy to set up a drill or course of fire that will either negate the need for NS or stress the importance of having NS
for score computation. No big deal. It is easy to do with all kinds of pistol mounted devices.

For me, the purpose of shooting is hitting. And that idea whether good or bad colors my opinion.
