    80% questions

So at the gun show last weekend, there were a huge number of 80% kits available for sale. A couple questions:
    1) Take the Sig 320 for example. When you see these for sale as a PPT, what are the odds it was sold as an 80% kit, and then finished buy some person who may or may not have the necessary skill to do it right?
    2) I was at the range recently and saw a guy with a Sig 320, new to him, and new looking, that he acquired through a PPT. He was frustrated with the accuracy and frankly even though his optic needed to be sighted in, his groups were not very tight. If that had originally been an 80% kit, and not machined/finished well, how much would that affect accuracy?
    3) How much skill does it really take to finish an 80% kit to the quality/precision it should be done. I don't have a drill press, and am not a machinist. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and have rebuilt car and motorcycle engines, but a machinist I am not. I have never seriously looked at the 80% kits because figure I would just mess the thing up. So, how much skill does it really require?

If you are in CA. the 80% pistol thing is dead due to the new laws.

I have built two recently (Glock) type. It's not hard to do, just takes some concentration and sometimes some fiddling to get them to go together properly.
    Poke'm with a stick!

You can't buy an 80% via ppt

"It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.

CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols." ~~ Quiet

Interesting. The things were for sale all over the place at the gun show. It seemed like there were more 80% pistols than 80% AR lowers.

I don’t believe it is illegal to sell or buy an 80% now. But it is illegal to finish it into a functional firearm in CA. I could be wrong on this, but that’s likely why you see them for sale.

As for how you could tell if a gun was originally an 80%, the serial number and other markings would likely give it away.

As for the inaccurate sig, you mentioned an optic. My guess is that the optic was loose, so the red dot is moving at each shot.

I would imagine that if the frame is an 80% frame it would have the manufacturer's markings on it, rather than showing the Sig name. Serial number is another thing that can be checked.

You can still buy 80% kits and they are everywhere: online, at gun shows, at LGS. But finishing it into a fully functional semi-automatic pistol may not be possible anymore under the current law AFAIK. I have to admit that I haven't invested in the time to read through all the regs and forum threads to know what the latest is, but I just know enough not to be bothered with it. YMMV.

Cali and some other states have passed laws concerning 80%. Still legal to buy but not to finish. Check where you live for current.
