Use whatever you are more accurate with.

    IMO...

    Stick with .45ACP JHP rounds.

On average, 9x19mm rounds penetrate deeper/farther than .45ACP rounds.

I would recommend looking at some of the experiments showing penetration of each round. You are likely going to see similar results between rounds. My recommendation is to keep around what you are most comfortable with.

I personally like the idea of pistol plus separate flashlight. Some people like shotguns, some like the ar, etc.

My Sig P227 45 acp is my nightstand gun and I keep it loaded with Dynamic Research Technologies frangible hollowpoints. Look them up.

          G34 or G17 with rail light...I wouldn't recommend .380 for HD (IMHO)

Great choice Ggarcia68...I use a P220 myself. I used a P226 for years, but switched over to the 45 last year.

                  Glock 19, reliable, and cheap.

god forbid, if you do get to use it, most likely, police will keep it as evidence.

and a GP100 loaded With 357s for home defense.

Unless you are trying to convince the wife to let you buy something new, I would say your current HD pistols are perfectly fine choices.

Exactly this! My HD is a G17 for many reasons, but this one for sure.

                            1. Shoot what you are confident with.
                            2. Use the right type of rounds (I use HP).

IMO the concern about hitting your own family members in a HD situation is WAY overblown.

If you get to the point where you need to discharge your weapon to protect the lives of you or your family the small chance that you'd hit one of them is small beer compared to the threat you are acting against.

Obviously, you don't want to be using a high powered rifle that would endanger people a thousand yards away, but any handgun round should be sufficient. And the famously poor penetration of the 55gr 223 is your friend here.

Frankly, you best bet is to be well trained and able to shoot quickly and accurately at close range. Any handgun or 223 is going to expend most of it's energy inside the body (assuming you hit something resembling center of mass). Paul Harrel demonstrates this over and over with his meat target where the bullets get stopped by the back side t-shirt or the first layer of the fleece backstop.

Spend your time training instead of trying to optimize the projectile to have just the right amount of lethality to quickly drop an intruder, but not enough to penetrate an interior wall ????

My preferred option is a Louisville slugger. Never over penetrates and has great stopping power.

If there are any cases of people in HD situations shooting their own side via over penetration please post. I've never heard of it happening.
