    429 Desert Eagle

Just saw this in Shooting Illustrated.

44 mag bullets in a 50 AE case

I think they should have used 41 mag bullets and got more velocity.

    (Even the picture is big)

Cause .50AE ammo wasn't expensive enough?

EXACTLY! Seems like an awful waste of effort for a range toy whose only purpose is to make noise and scare noobs.

So what, exactly, is the point?

Buy a friggin big damn gun...and shoot little rounds through it....hmmm....

Sorta like the Ferrari guy who can’t afford insurance...and is afraid to use it for its’ intended purpose....

Let's not get carried away, I have guns for no other purpose than to make loud noise at the renge, nothing wrong with that. Even have guns with expensive ammo.

I'm going to open my own ammo design firm:

If it's straight walled, make a necked version.
If it's necked, make a straight walled version.

Need a 10mm DE, necked down 50AE to 10mm. That should send 200 grain bullets to 1800-1900 FPS. Imagine Lehigh 150 grain penetrators over 2000 FPS.

I’m thinking the 429DE is nothing more than 440 Corbon. It’s not a slouch, but really nothing new.

                Comes in stainless?!?! I'm down!
I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

44 mag bullets in a 50 AE case

I think they should have used 41 mag bullets and got more velocity.

                      From your link:

The 429 DE (Desert Eagle) was designed to enhance the famous and powerful Desert Eagle platform. This cartridge has a 25% velocity increase and 45% energy increase over a 44 Mag (240 — 6" barrel). It has a velocity of 1600 FPS with 240 grain bullets and 1750 FPS with 210 grain bullets.

.41 Remington Magnum typically uses a 210 grain, but then you'd have a smaller meplat before expansion. Then one has to consider bullet construction and at what speeds they might be limited to. Copper solids on the other hand... have at it!

One can easily get a 240 grain to 1600 from a 16" lever carbine and stay well under max pressures. One may also get a 270 grain to 1500 easily albeit in the same shoulder-fired weapon.

I love me some .44 Mag DE. It's like shooting a big 1911.

Like Jtrocks said, looks like a 440 Corbon. I have wanted to rechamber a 44 lever gun to that round for some time.

As the owner of a .50AE Desert Eagle (Israel), I think I'll pass. The ergonomics of the design absolutely suck, and some are prone to functionality issues if not cleaned often enough. Given the choice, a .454 Casull revolver would be much better.
