Shot a Glock for the first time

Maybe hard to believe but I shot a Glock for the first time a few days ago. I've had a 92FS since the 90's that I loved and never really considered that I might want something else. I had shot 1911s before as well and, heresy I know, they didn't click for me.

What got me to try a rental was that I am building a AR45 PCC that takes Glock mags and figured it made sense to have a pistol that could also use those magazine - which sounds reasonable, but is really just an excuse to buy another gun

So I took a rental G21 that was pretty beat up and tried it out. Against all my expectations, I loved it! I shot tiny groups with it right out of the gate. Yeah, the trigger is a little mushy, but it was nice to have a consistent pull instead of having to switch from DA to SA with the Beretta. I have big hands so the double stack 45 grip was no problem. The pointability was perfect and it was just a really no-nonsense pistol, and I respect that.

My two issues:

- Like I hear from a lot of people, I did not like the finger grooves. I know they can be removed. Does anyone replace the poly frame? Is that even something you can do in CA?

- The magazines were ridiculously tight. I was only able to get 9 rounds in and that ninth was a *****. I ended up just loading to 8 to save my thumb skin.

Gonna get one for sure now so I need to know my upgrade options

you can MOD the frame but not replace the frame, that is the part that has the SN on that counts.

I'm glad to hear that you are expanding your handgun selection. I really don't modify my Glocks as I don't mind the gun as it comes from the factory. I will typically do a polish on internals but keep the rest stock (except for sights). Glock plastic sights are the first thing to go. Have fun with the new platform.

I had the same impression when I first bought my Glock. I was use to my CZ mags as they were way easier to load. When you buy a Glock it comes with a cheap mag loader which I use for the 10th round. But the mags loosen up over time and keeping them loaded helps the spring loosen up

Look for a used Gen 2 Glock 21.

When you buy a Glock it comes with a cheap mag loader which I use for the 10th round. But the mags loosen up over time and keeping them loaded helps the spring loosen up

Also, the Uplula works well for me.

I had the same sentiments my first time with a Glock. As a kid, we had a 1911, some revolvers and a small .32 semi auto that my dad carried while at the shop. I found the mag loader that comes with the Glocks to be well worth it, I have purchased many over the years. I keep extras all over. I did try the cheaper versions of the mag loader. I found the major difference being the quality of the polymer used for manufacture versus Glock's to be sub par. But when I started to use the Uplula, that is a God send.

I've run 5200 rounds through my G17. It is stock, except for Dawson sights (fixed rear-fiber optic front).

My suggestion is to run a bunch of ammo through it before doing any mods, except for sights. Things will break in, and the trigger will smooth out and have a nice break.

The mags will soften up with use, but I use the Uplula, as well--saves my poor fingers.

Yeah, Glocks aren't the sexiest things in the world, but they are reliable, and easy to maintain.

i got my first glock last year and love it. Always thought they were ugly, but at the end of the day, its a tool. And a reliable one at that.

Should you buy one, try it out for a class in the factory set up.

The trigger reset is good on glocks.

You might appreciate the finger groves after 2-3 days of shooting

Get an Uplula! It'll change your life....

I've always been a big DA/SA fan - just really the era I began shooting handguns (mid-80's). Back then it was always the old 1911 guys going on about how 9mm was weak and the Beretta was not a "real" gun like a 1911. I eventually got my first 1911 a few years later and loved that too. But my Beretta was still my fave.

I did shoot a friend's Gen 1 Glock in the 80's and liked it (that was back when I'd say the majority of people hated them - seems the opposite now). I've always liked Glocks but didn't own one personally until about 2 years ago. Now I have two. Like you the standard G21 isn't a problem for me and since so many people have little "girly hands" (just kidding) you can get them cheap. I paid less than $400 for my Gen 3 and it was basically brand new.

Is it possible to buy a Glock frame through an FFL and build a pistol like you would an AR? (In CA)
