    S&W 500 Magnum

Today was range day. Lots of fun, but the high-lite was the S&W 500 Magnum one of the guys brought and let everyone take a few shots with the "Man's" gun.

Lots of good fun shooting today. Already looking forward to next month.

Get involved, let's fix these 2nd Amendment misunderstandings.

It's not the size of your gun that counts, only the fun factor...

Got a picture of the target?

I'd say "Man's" gun is more a matter of where it shoots, v. how big it is.

A few years ago, a bunch of friends and I went to a private ranch, and I brought my .500 S&W. I put a full can of soda out at about 15 yards on a stump and let my friends have at it. Everyone shot a cylinder full, and not a scratch on the can. Everyone had a blast (literally) but no one even hit the stump, let alone the can. I hit it on the second shot.

I have a buddy that brings his S&W Model 360 PD along... to show owners of various S&W500 models what *real* recoil is like.

S&W M500 or 460 X Frames are really accurate, I mean that is "Hunting Accuracy"
I tried several bullets and believe S&W X Frames like Hornady FTX.

          M500 open sight + Hornady 300FTX

Not so good with Speer JSP 350, M500 open sight

          M460 scoped + Hornady 200FTX

Problem is Hornady FTX bullets are expensive, I hesitate to click "add to cart" button

LOL! The guns are CRAZY accurate, but yes, fighting the urge to anticipate the recoil can be a bit of a challenge. I can shoot the 500 accurately no problem but I used to have a little 454 ruger alaskan, and that thing kicked like a mofo...and man, my anticipation was bad with it! In any case, they are fun to shoot for sure, do major damage to 2 liters and watermelons, and best of all, the fireballs can't be beat

Funny you should say this - I have 4 X-Frames (two with bipods and mounted scopes) and a 360PD and I always tell people that 360PD with full magnum loads is by far the hardest gun to shoot.

Actually, I will let beginners shoot the X-Frames if they show me they can handle the recoil reasonably well, yet I have never let anyone but very experienced shooters shoot the 360PD.

Own one and it was a great decision, bring it out and smiles abound. Though I always take the proper cautions with shooters new to it.

I understand completely...when I shot my first 50 cal BMG...I basically was getting ready for the recoil...not even sure where on the side of the mountain it hit....

The .500 Magnum is the most ridiculous thing ever. Huge, heavy gun, expensive ammo, tremendous muzzle blast, and prodigious recoil. Absolutely impractical and useless.
