    Takedown Power,

I was watching the Best Defense the other day and they made mention of stopping power charts. Now I did a few searches and couldnt find a chart that actually made sense nor was consistent. I'm looking for the different takedown/stopping power figures for all handgun calibers. Any of you guys use a particular chart and trust its information to be accurate? Thanks.

I guess the question would be, how do you define "stopping power"? Lots of studies over the years, and lots of disagreement. You can pick any chart you want and there will always be lots of people who say it's bogus.

I think the general consensus is that large caliber is good, small caliber not so good. Past that you're going to get as many different opinions as there are people on this forum.

Good point. I normally use the Remington quick ballistic charts. I was just checking to see if you gun gurus with more experience then myself use something else to gauge the effectiveness of certain certain firearms.

I know I'm not gonna go charging after assailants with my little .22. I was just curious how my other firearms stack up against each other.

There are 'stopping power' stats from law enforcement; realize bullet placement is key v. caliber. Just as important is the target...bigger targets need bigger bullets

For game animals, perhaps applicable to humans, perhaps not...google 'taylor knockout value'.

There is no "measurable" statistic that measures "stopping power." Generally speaking handgun calibers are poor incapicitators in general and do not create a significant temporary cavity to cause additional permanent wounding. With rifle calibers that's a whole different story. Choose the caliber you're most comfortable with because I think most would agree that shot placement and accurate fire are the most important thing in a gunfight.

.45, and by that I mean anything that has .45 in it's name. Discussion over.

Yeah, I was thinking about putting a hellfire pod on the roof. Still debating on it though. Its either that or killer attack robots. Haha.

How does one get those kind of reports? I subscribe to alot of mags and most of the time I'm weeding through puff pieces.

I had a friend in middle school who's brother accidentally shot him in the stomach with a .22. He said he went down like a rock.

That said, I'll take anything .45 size and up.

There's many ways to stop someone from coming at you. Stopping power in the sense of high impact energy, with significant amounts of it transferred to the target, is one way to look at it. Presicion/lethal shots is a different way to achieve the same thing. A small projectile hitting someone in the right spot is bound to stop someone just as fast as a big projectile hit anywhere. A well-aimed .22LR that goes through someone's small of their mouth and rattles around in their skull has just as much stopping power as a barrage of .45 ACP that keeps wounding that assailant until he stops.
