I am a 9mm guy and there are no good 9mm 1911 on roster, so I have SA loaded 9mm and colt GC NM 9mm as my base guns.
For the SA loaded 9mm, Brett did a full custom on it, and I like the final work. For the Colt GC NM 9mm, I am still trying to figure out what I want to do with it, so it would be my 2020 project gun if I want to keep it.
I may just get one .45 1911 , and this would be a full custom WC 1911, just for collection because I have no intention to stock .45 ammo.
If you care about the resell value, full custom gun on the base gun won't be a good choice unless you have top-notch pistolsmith works on it. Otherwise, its a good idea to buy a base gun and find a good pistolsmith works on it.Comment

^^^ This.
SVI Infinity is on the roster (look under Strayer-Voigt) and they will do the full custom work even for CA residents. Look at the gallery on their website www.sviguns.com to get some wild ideas.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

For a great shooter, choose a solid but simple base gun, then have a local gunsmith "race it up." I have two done by Brett Cifaldi (member on this forum, Will O'Hara's apprentice) and they are amazing shooters, with sub-2lb triggers.
Just an idea...sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

I used to have 4 1911s, then I did option 3) and now only have my custom one. (I do have a 2nd one in 10mm)I’m a 1911 fan. Haven’t had a new handgun, except for a Glock 43, in the past 2 years. Haven’t had a new 1911 in a long time...
Sold off many of my guns before and wanted to have a smaller collection. Only kept the ones that are valuable to me. Keeping the collection small is still high priority but acquiring a new one is fine...
I’m intrigued again I guess. Or there is an itch that probably needs scratching. I have a 1911 in mind but is off-roster... so here is where I need ideas...
1. Stay put; Hope that one shows up in the marketplace and is local
2. Buy something similar and on roster to make life easy
3. Fully customize an existing semi-custom 1911 (that works perfectly fine) to my specs and wishes
4. Buy a base gun (likely a Colt Series 70) now and fully customize later, as in next year or so
5. Any other thoughts?
Thanks all!
No Nighthawk, Les Baer, Ed Brown or high end Kimbers and SAs draw my attention anymore.
No matter how fancy it is, your custom 1911 is better because it has everything you wanted.Frank Da TankComment
