    Bluing My 1911

The very first handgun I bought is a stainless SA Loaded 1911. After 13 years and a lot of use, I want to give it a paint job. I want to spend around $200. May I have some recommendations?

    Bluing My 1911

Stainless can be blued but not many shops do it as it requires a completely different setup and is very rarely requested.

You could have it stripped down and a nice glass media bead blast done to it which will refresh the stainless look.

Slide? Frame or whole gun? 200 isn't alot for a complete refinish job. Parts? Prep work is 90% of it.

Easiest thing to do is just bead blast it after stripping every part. Will leave a nice clean finish. Where are you located?

                  Dura-coat.
They have a stainless steel color that when done right looks just like stainless. OR any color you decide to go with.

I use Muriatic Acid and Cold Blue to color Stainless to a darkish matte gray.
I swab on the Acid, followed quickly with the Cold Blue. The piece will turn black, but it is not deep or permanent and will rub or wash off, leaving varying degrees of dark matte grey, depending on the stainless steel's composition.

Read up and follow the usual precautions when using Acid.
