    Double Action Trigger Pull question

    Hi all,

I have a Ruger P94 9mm. It's a great gun, but I've always wondered if there are DA handguns that have a consistent trigger pull regardless of the hammer position. Or is it simply a product of it's design? I don't really shoot enough to get used to it so perhaps another gun would suit me better.

Alternately, is it possible to rework the trigger on my P94 so that the trigger pull is the same regardless of hammer position?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Presumably you mean DA/SA - first action both cocks the hammer, then releases it, and after the first shot the recoil process cocks the hammer, and the trigger just releases it.

Mechanically, since the first is doing more, it's always going to be different from SA. How much different can be a little variable.

Glocks, for instance, have a striker; it's always 'sort of' cocked, because you have to retract and release the slide to chamber a round in the first place. It's trigger is at least consistent (some would say 'consistently bad').

Sig has a new-ish trigger "DAK" that is supposed to provide a consistent DA or a short-reset SA in the same gun. I've never used one.

Sounds like you are looking for a Double Action Only (DAO) pistol (Sig w/DAK, HK w/LEM, Beretta w/D-suffix, S&W DAO, Para LDA, etc) or a Glock/XD/M&P/Sigma/P99QA, etc.

There are many pistols that have this feature. The P94 just isn't one of them.

          Good information... Thanks.

I agree. I'll have to rent a couple DAO pistols. Thanks.

            It's called leverage.

SA pull is lighter than DA because the the trigger exerts more leverage on the hammer hooks via the sear.

DA pulls are long and heavy because the mainspring needs to be compressed. You could make a mechanism to reduce the DA pull to match the SA, but it would be too bulky for a concealable firearm.
