According to my S&W reference book, it was produced from S/N 1 to 15375, c. 1907-1915, so yeah the shop is accurate. Value depending on condition can run from$250 in poor condition to $5,000 as new in box.

Supposed to be VERY accurate. Highly desirable triple lock.

I have a slightly newer, although rarer, "Wolf and Klar" version of this pistol and have researched it quite extensively. Your model can go as high as $12K for mint version. If you send check for $75 to the S&W Historical Foundation, C/O Roy G. Jinks, PO Box 69, Warren, MA, 01803, with serial number and description, you will receive a complete of this gun that will more than pay for itself when you or your airs seek to sell it. And congratulations, by the way, for inheriting this fine gun. Finally, if you do want to sell it, let me know.

Those are pretty in-demand. The .44 Special is a "shooter's caliber." Lots you can do with it if you load your own ammo, and very accurate.

I love the classic slender barrel with shrouded ejector rod look. Just screams "classic S&W" to me. Congrats on receiving a pretty damn nice handgun.

Yup, that looks like a triple lock target model. The pics are too small to tell if its been refinished though. It looks to be unmolested and in nice shape so having an original finish or not will have the most influence on its value.

Don't ever leave it at a gun shop though. The idiot monkeys that work at most of them might damage or steal it.

I believe 1908. My S&W Reference shows #1 was 1908 and #2050 was 1909. If it is a three digit number it will be 1908.

If you are a reloader the 44 Special is a great cartridge to reload for.

My arthritic hands manages that caliber well indeed. Great heirloom and treasure in my book.

Wonderful gun! And the target model is even more rare. Congratulations. I know I could not afford it! (Well, maybe I could....)
