To Customize or not to customize...that is the question.

When we buy our firearms, a lot of us customize them to fit our needs, make them more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, or just perform better.

Personally, I am of the school of thought that believes that if you modify a firearm too much, reliability takes a nose dive. But I do believe in making mods to firearms. I do not mod my carry firearms beyond stippling and sights...if needed.

So, do you guys modify your firearms or no?

My IA will only let me adjust sights and grips on a carry gun, so I do...night sights and Talon grip tape. On range toys, I might change barrels and/or guide rods and springs.

I'll usually change out the grips and sometimes the sights on my 1911's but usually that's it. Depending on the revolver or other pistol, I'll likely change out the grips and maybe springs. For my Glocks, I always install extended controls and sometimes the sights. The Glocks may or may not get an aftermarket barrel swap too. Of course, if there are issues with the gun, then those will get addressed, which could mean either upgraded or OEM parts.

So the short answer is, yes, I do customize for both aesthetic and functional reasons but usually nothing over the top IMO.

I get new grips for some to make them more comfortable to hold. I have medium hand so Sig P220 grip is just too slim for me so I'd get woodgrips to fatten it which fill my hand just right.
SRT is also an option that's not a radical upgrade.
Maybe new sights only for my HD.

I like to change sights on some guns (especially Glocks). I put a steel recoil rod in my PPQ to see if it did anything (jury is still out on that). Some CZ's have had work done on them, but those are "non carry" guns, not that I carry anything, but if SHTF, I'd take a non-modded gun.

Yeah but I’m not into extreme modifications, if that makes sense. Certain things are a gimme, any gun that comes with plastic sights automatically gets a new set of steel sights. All my gen 4 Glocks get a minus connector, Gen 3’s get the dot connector out of the 4 and all get a 6lb trigger spring.

On 1911s all full size guns get a mainspring housing with a magwel and depending on the trigger may get a 19 lb mainspring.

M&P’s get a APEX trigger, may or may not get other APEX parts. The only exception to this is my Shield that is still stock and that’s only because I’m putting it off because the sights are such a bear.

But as others have said nothing that effects the reliability of said weapons (rifles, pistols or shotguns.) Sights on a few of my pistols, I had a couple of the night sights had grown dim that were replaced with TruGlow TFO/TFX's. My eyes are getting old sadly so I stepped up to fibers because of the high visibility.

It depends on the gun and the parts. Just like different gun brands, different aftermarket parts brands will have different levels of reliability. Some are widely used and have good track records. And some companies like Glock have their own drop-in parts.

But generally if it requires fitting or I can't find universally good reviews of the part, I avoid them.

I chose "No". My Glock 17 is so far unmodified. If I do a mod, I will only switch out the sights for Dawson's.

Most definitely modify competition/range-only guns.

I have a CA p226 that i have been wondering a lot about. When i first purchased the firearm I removed the magazine disconnect safety (every other state's p226 doesnt have this) and replaced the mainspring with a 18lb spring (stock is 21 lb). SA trigger pull weight is 4 lb.

I have been wondering if i should return my p226 to complete stock configuration should i need to use it for self defense. Not that i am worried about reliability, just i read that modifying actions/disabling safeties can paint you as a "reckless" character - regardless of whether it actually came to play in the case.

I cannot tell if that is just paranoia or not, ive read countless forum posts saying yay and countless posts saying nay.

Thoughts?
