First of all, you should immediately separate the upper from the lower so you are not caught with an illegal AW! The registration date has passed so the only solution would be to convert it via a new designed mag lock device lock a AR Maglock, Raddlock Relock, Juggernaut Hellfighter, etc.

Can also keep the normal mag release but make it non-semi-auto.

A lot of people do seem to like the new ejection-port loaders for fixed-mag AR's, I haven't tried them myself but people are saying they're pretty good, if slightly expensive.

I second the above advice to immediately separate the upper from the lower while you sort this out, so you aren't in caught in possession of (currently an infraction, subject to confiscation and a $500 fine) or transporting of (misdemeanor/felony, subject to imprisonment) an unregistered AW.

Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

Sure. The idea is that you leave the fixed magazine in the firearm permanently, and instead of opening the action to reload, you shove rounds into the magazine through the ejection port. Instead of carrying a bunch of magazines, you'd carry a bunch of the loaders (which is, unfortunately, rather expensive when you're buying a lot of them)

            MA loader

            BF-10 loader

It's also interesting that as ignorant CA law makers pass "Feel Good (to them)" gun laws, innovative 2nd Amendment advocates bypass those laws with ease.

I have seen maglock devices, like the Hellfighter kits mentioned, that are now quicker than the bullet button (when used the way law makers intended).

Anyway, on topic -- yeah, until you figure out what you want to do, separate the upper and lower. There is no such thing (yet) as constructive possession of an AR15 (well, except if you have the parts to make it an automatic rifle ).

i modded mine that had a bullet button by taking a 22lr case and cutting it in half removed the spring and replaced it with the brass then epoxied over the hole

a 22 case is easy to mod if you just use a wire cutter around the rim then use scissors to cut in a spiral fashion to get it to length

harbor freight epoxy was on sale for $2 and it took around a pea size dollip of each

then i bought a bimini pin from ebay for $3 to replace the rear takedown pin

i wasnt going to show this but here is my little keeper taken from a keychain

You can also convert it to a featureless rifle, if you are so inclined.

Note that, if he did that, it could never again legally be turned back into a pistol, it's a one-way street. But yes, putting a 16+" barrel and a buttstock on it and making it a featureless rifle (instead of a pistol, which can't be featureless) is another option.

Get the ARMag lock and call it a day, OP.

Yeah, but you can only outrun the antis for awhile. Then they pass new laws that people have to find a way to get around. If you're going to have a gun in California, you have to keep up on the legislation.
