SAA 44 Presentation

So morbid as it goes when I lose someone (or in this case my dog) I tend to buy a gun. This firearm will mostly be for show; it will be shot but probably just a box or two of ammo at most. I then want to put it in a prominent spot so I can remind myself of my Great Dane that had to go over the rainbow bridge last week. He was shinny, stout and that is how I remember him so I believe in the 44 mag caliber to match his size and it must be deep blue high quality in presentation to match black coat.

Are the only two new viable gun choices in single action army Uberti and Ruger (I don't much care for the finish on Rugers). Is Uberti / Taylor my only choice? I notice even Bass Pro carries them. I'm in no hurry - can't likely afford a new Colt.

The Uberti will have an action like a Colt, though I heard new ones have a new safety feature that would turn me off whatever it is. Uberti are extremely accurate copies. But if you want a .44 Magnum then their larger frame “Buckhorn” model would be it. I think they make them with fixed sights, too. Go on Gunbroker and search “Uberti” or “Cimarron” .44 magnum and you’ll see options. Sorry you lost your dog and I like your way of celebrating him.

Ruger's lack the kind of finish you desire.

A simple thought. The .45 Colt case and the .44 Magnum case are the same size(length anyway).

Uberti offers many fine presentation guns in the SAA format.

Nothing wrong with Uberti/Taylor/Cimarron, etc but you may want to consider a few not so well known alternatives.

The Beretta Stampede is a very well made SA revolver, probably Uberti made to their parent company's specs. I have their Bisley model and Colt grips are a near perfect match on them. few years back Colt made their own transfer bar version SA revolver called the "Cowboy" and from what I've seen they go in the high $600.00s nowadays.

I have a few Italian made SA revolvers and the few issues I have with them are proof/import stamps all over the place (Cimarron doesn't have that issue) and the frames are a tad larger than Colts. The various "safety systems" can be obnoxious as heck, or just mildly so. The new Cimarron safety isn't too much of a pain, but you lose one of the "4 clicks".

Thanks, was doing a lot of clicking around, and notice the 44mag category lacks heavily in the SAA firearms; I am willing to do the 44-40 or 45. Thanks for the links and ideas. I hope to find something soon.

Stay away from EMF crap. Uberti is tbe ne for clones Taylor goes a step above on the Uberties they offer, next in line is Cimarron, Beretta no longer produced but are available second hand. Other than Colt USFA is the top dog! But they are in the same boat as Beretta.

If you want something really special, pick up a blued .44 Blackhawk or Vaquero and send it to Hamilton Bowen for his “Western Classic” conversion. Action work, black powder chamfer on the cylinder, bluing and real color case hardening by Turnbull, and some other niceties.

Jimmy's here knows of what he speaks. EMF, and I'm talking "Armi San Marco" made beautifully made guns that were sometimes interchangeable with Colt parts. But the hammer and triggers appear to have been heat treated over a BIC lighter. They are made of mush and break even when using the guns with great care. Stick with Uberti made guns if you are going for a pasta blaster. I stuck a Colt hammer and trigger in an EMF and it works fine now.

I have one of those in 45 Colt I got in the mid 90s. It's not as pretty as it once was because I carried it a lot hunting and fishing and I shoot it a lot. Nothing has broke on it yet.

Thinking of it

My funds are kind of limited but I'm also thinking that'd take so long to get I'd probably be able to afford it "by then." I wonder how I'd even find one. The auction sites I haven't used. Guess there is the first time for everything; he was my first Great Dane.

Knew this thread was still there. I never did find one. I did find a wonderful S&W Model 27 with a great blue finish; I consider that my "Oliver" Gun for the wonderful dog he was.

Now I reinstate this thread because I'm searching again. This time I lost Oliver's little sister. She too was a Great Dane, same parents as Oliver, next litter. She was an absolute joy in every aspect. She must have had a stroke last night for she was not able to move much today. I was able to carry her to the vet and they advised it was her time. Miss her already.

So for gracie I want a nickel shine finish with a white pearl like handle in 38/357 and this time definitely SAA not like the Model 27 I opted for on Oliver. I know they are out there - time to go shopping.

My condolences for your great loss, but also I am hopeful when I see that they were truly loved. They stay with you forever.
