I have both 1st and 2nd. They are one in the same. I would opt for a 2nd gen and spend the rest on a cool belt rig and ammo. IMO

As to your question, if you limit yourself to having to inspect any Colt you are going to buy, you will have to put some serious road miles on your car, they just don't tend to come up for sale all that often. Even here in Nevada I have only seen a couple for sale, but you might try calling dealers in Las Vegas and see what they have.

If I was looking for a SAA and I wasn't knowledgeable, I would buy some books first and study like crazy. There are lots of refinished and parts guns out there and they certainly aren't worth what an original one is worth. I would then haunt the auction sites and make an informed bid on the one I liked the best, but only if they offer a 3 day inspection period.

Check it out at the receiving dealer and if it isn't what they represented it to be, send it back. I use a credit card to buy guns online as I have the option of cancelling the payment if the seller doesn't want to refund the purchase price.

Stay away from the auctions where the pictures are poor and out of focus as the seller may be trying to hide something. Lots of good photos are a sign that the seller isn't trying to hide any condition issues. I have bought maybe a half dozen firearms off of gunbroker and have yet to be dissappointed.

Guns in oddball calibers should be cheaper, but then you have the issue of trying to get ammo if you intend to shoot it. .45 Colt guns are the most desireable and consequently more expensive, followed by .44wcf and .38-40.

IMO, anything over a hundred years old should be shot sparingly.

By all accounts, the latest generation Colt SAA are among the best revolvers they have ever made. If I was buying simply as a shooter, I would probably get a new one. Warranty etc.
