Python fans and experts please add your 2 cents

Ok, I have a minty 6" blued Python that I love! But generally my interest and experience in collecting (or gathering) is with Smith autos and revolvers - along with a reasonable collection of 1911's and a smattering of P7M8's

I am looking to add another Python in stainless. Looks like their are several different types - Polished and brushed stainless - obviously 4 and 6 inch barrels. I am not looking to the shorter barreled version as they don't appeal, especially at their current price point.

What are the experienced Colt fans opinions. This may be shot or reside in the safe for an occasional look - see.....Thanks

If it was me I'd collect blue Pythons and Diamondbacks.

Blued definitely looks nicer but harder to keep in pristine condition. There are less stainless ones out there and polished is even nicer but extremely hard to keep perfect. So either buy a stainless if you plan to shoot it or one of the others for collecting.

To each his own, however the only Pythons I've ever seen that I didn't at all care for were the stainless. The finish is unremarkable and the actions, made in the early - 80's IIRC, were terrible by most standards. If I bought one it would have to be handled first and at a good price.

              Collectable...Blue....Nickel....Colt Revolver....Good.

              Collectable...Stainless Steel...Colt Revolver....Bad.

The words, stainless steel, collectable, revolver, belong to Smith & Weasal and other groups. Or that is what the dude on the High-Horse said at the gun show.

Well, in general I would have to agree with you regarding stainless weapons, BUT - I am very fond of my 952-2, 4563, 4566, 4013, 3913 5903, 5906 and 66-1's

Two questions before replying to your post . . .

Question #1 - Will you be shooting it?

                    Questions #2 - What's the budget?

I would far prefer the blued versions over the SS...Since I wouldnt buy to to shoot... the blue is far more aesthetically pleasing to me...

Question #1 - maybe - but probably not - way to much other stuff in the safe that has never been shot by me

Question # 2 - Depends on the weapon in question! I will try to never overpay, but have the funds to pay if the moment strikes me

Close to what I am considering - hard to tell from the pictures - but is it polished or brushed SS. If you would be so kind - PM me with what you had to pay for the item!

If you can afford the "Limited Production" Pythons like Snake Eyes, Silver Snake, Hunter, CA Combat, Bicentennial and those special organization orders . . . well, go for it, they will hold and increase value and the highlight of anyone's collection.

If you are looking at a regular production to have, I recommend 1977 and older. Quality from factory is best from 1955 to 1965, and better 1966 to 1977.

I would avoid mass production years (1978 to 1984) and strike years (1986 to 1990). The workmenship is just not there.

I personally don't see the high values people put on those mass production and strike years but that is just my opinion.

These days, box and papers are often faked and also watch out and the term "unfired" or "never fired" in descriptions. Dead giveaway!

If you are not going to shoot it, then make sure the finish, grips, screws, sights, are all original and best condition available. After that, fondle all day long, take professional pictures, showoff to father in laws and so on

                              Good luck with your search.
