XDM automatically racks when inserting mag

So kind of startles me occasionally and was wondering why this keeps happening.

XDM 4.5 with ten round capped magazines. On last round slide open. I have to really slam the magazine in there for it to properly lock in or it will fall out. When doing this the rack will break loose and load a round in the chamber all in the same motion.

Never happens with an empty mag, neither the problem locking in or the automatic slide rack.

Any ideas why this is occurring? Since it's not everytime it definitely startles me when I'm not expecting it. Might be one of the mods installed, lighter power rod spring is installed.

This is normal with almost every semi auto pistol—not that all pistols do it, but that it happens across a wide variety of makes and models. A full mag has a lot of mass compared to an empty mag. Follow the four rules of gun safety and it is not a problem.

Good to know, thanks! Yeah not a safety concern just surprises. Wanted to make sure nothing was malfunctioning

This is a feature not a flaw. Faster reloads. Handy feature when competing in USPSA. Drives me nuts when it doesn't happen.

it doesn't happen with an empty mag because the follower pushes the slide lock up.

Yes, normal in a lot of polymer guns these days.

I have 5 different xdms (caliber, barrel length, I love xDMs) not including the ones I sold, and none of mine do this. Either before or after I converted to powder river precision kits. Im not saying its bad, juat noting along with Terry here, that mine dont do that. I did have a p320 that did that and I never saw it as a bad thing.

My HK does it and one of it's features that I really like.

It would be nice if it was designed into the gun as a feature. I mean if you insert a magazine into an empty gun why on earth WOULDN'T you want it to go back into battery for you automatically?

It happens almost reliably on my g19 if I give it my best Hulk impression and go HULK SMASH MAG on it. I can think of a couple occasions of it happening with my 226 and USP with the same "technique". I just account it to the physics of the slide stop being held up by the slide vs the force of being jarred by the motion of slamming the magazine (other things I'm likely missing, but that's the gist of it)

A few times the mag has falling out after the first shot on me so I started putting them in with some force. Not a hulk smash but more force than normal lol

This is normal, and not just with polymer frames.

I was a bit surprised though when my trusty CZ-85B started to do that as it broke in. On at least one occasion the force of the fresh magazine caused the slide to drop BEFORE the magazine was flush and thus it closed on an empty chamber.

Expected a bang, got a click = No bueno. Especially considering the high quality and reliability of CZ pistols.

It's even more helpful when competing in IDPA where you're forced to shoot to slide lock. All our CZ & Steyr pistols have this lovely feature when the mag is inserted with authority. They called it the "birthday reload" when we were out at Front Sight doing the 4 day class.

I am equally driven bat guano crazy when I actually have to use the release to get the pistol back in action. Very frustrating when the timer is running, you are not alone pointerman!

                              Regards,
