Also the ONLY .50 cal gun not allowed to be purchased anymore is the .50BMG. All other calibers are OK, .50AE, .50DTC, .50Beowulf, etc...

Just an FYI - San Francisco has banned "50 caliber" handguns. Really, they have an ordinance banning 50 caliber handguns and I believe 50 caliber handgun ammo in San Franciso. Now it may be unenforceable, but it is on the books.

They don't specifically define what is 50 caliber - is a .499 diameter bullet a 50 caliber, is a .510 50 caliber, is it the cartridge designation or the name on the gun, etc. Is a T/C 500 Smith barrel safe? So poorly written and foolish and I presume violates preemption.

I'll bet virtually no one knows or cares, including the police. But I suppose that wouldn't stop our DA from making trouble for someone.

Regarding the 1911 50 cal - IIRC it shoots a 325 grain bullet at about 700 fps? That doesn't seem to me to be a whole lot better than a hotly loaded 230 grain 45 ACP.

Wow, that is a big, slow bullet. IIRC you need around 1,000 FPS to even cause good expansion with hollowpoints. I don't see how this is an improvement on .45ACP at all. BUT then I usually avoid anything even approaching an "exotic" caliber. I don't like hunting (and paying out the butt) for ammo. And why are they calling it ".50GI"? I'm pretty sure a .50-cal handgun has never been in the U.S. inventory.

.50GI most likely refers to the maker and designer, Guncrafter Industries.

I've held a Model 2 at Canyon Sports. That was one well-put together gun, on par with the Baers, Browns, and Wilsons there. I don't know if it's an improvement on the .45acp, but having a .50 caliber 1911 is plain cool. Plus you can get a .45acp conversion for it. I'll plan on placing an order the day I win the lottery.

I don't believe you can buy a top-end "kit" for an existing 1911 in .45 ACP, as I believe the mags are wider to fit the fatter round, and will not fit inside a standard frame. You can order a 50GI pistol with an extra, fitted .45 ACP slide/barrel combo, and Ithink you can use the 50GI mags w/.45 ammo.

It's called 50 GI because of the company's name, Guncrafter Industries, not because it was ever Government Issue.

How lame. Figures SF would have something stupid like that. I really hope that city sinks into the bay.

They make a top end kit for the Glock 21, but will not sell top ends for 1911's.

I've handled one and it's a quality piece, but my friend that bought it is more of a collector than a shooter, and I haven't been able to get him to the range with the GI for a test session.

I'd consider picking one up if it was a little more affordable.

I'd rather buy a Wilson 1911 for that amount of money.

They could have at least chambered it in 50AE. At least THAT obscure, outmoded, unnecessary, ineffectual round wouldn't require new dies.

No they couldn't have. The 50 GI and 50 AE are nothing alike. The AE is a magnum powered round while the 50 GI is more suitable for a semi automatic service pistol.

besides the cool factor, it's no more effective than .45 acp which makes it a total waste of money.

Bullet manufacturers can design a bullet to expand at pretty much any velocity they choose. Notice that 45ACP 230gr and 9mm 147 gr run less than a 1000fps but expand very well. All else being equal, every HP has a range of velocities where it will expand. Too slow leads to no expansion while too fast and it'll fragment. There is no general expansion threshold.
