In so confused I'm sorry if I'm beating a dead horse.

My understanding is and please correct me if I'm wrong.

To legally have a ar pistol I must...

First build it from an 80% lower, and manufacture it as a single shot bold action. I can do this by not installing a gas block, and converting the magazine to only allow 1 bullet to loaded at a time.

2nd I must have it engraved prior to 7-1-18

3rd I must install BB 2.0

4th the flash hider must be pinned.

5th I can then gunsmith it myself by adding the gas block.

I should document via photos and video each step as to be able to show it was originally manufactured as a single shot bolt action pistol.


Am I good to go? What am I missing.

Thank you all for the help, California sucks and I just want to be legal.


Ps. I am doing a 5.56 with a 7.5" barrel of that matters?

Uh with BB 2.0 I don't think you need to pin muzzle device unless its to be used for length

Lightstrider does the barrel length matter when needing flash hider pinned? Or just the fact that BB 2.0 is present elementates that need?

iirc you need a 6in minimum barrel and 10.5in overall length. flash hider and other features along with semi auto go into AW classification but youll at least be starting with a single shot so features dont necessarily matter.

you can do bolt action via no gas system and have standard features and a 10rd mag.

I think you can also have a functional gas system and thats when you need to fix a zero round mag.
