I don't know how big a G30 is, but I love my SIG P220 Carry. It's my primary carry gun.

XDs 3.3 or 4 inch .45. Off roster, though. Why, yes, I just happen to be selling one in the marketplace.

Something smaller than a G30 “that you can shoot well” should be the question.
I prefer the 45acp as well but only in a pistol that is easy to handle. The Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail is my favorite but not always practical during summertime, for me anyways.
I carry a G36 sometimes but really prefer the 1911 platform.

I had a colt defender for a while. That thing was fun, but a short barrel and .45 will play hell on your hands. Doesn't really make a difference for a real life CCW moment, but for training shooting a hundred or few hundred rounds out of it is going to suck.

Jeff Cooper before he passed thought the then-new micro Kimbers the best of the small 1911s chambered in .45 auto.

I learned of this, read it, actually, directly from his monthly missives (now bound and published as Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip, Vols. 1, 2, and 3) -after- I had purchased the Ultra CDP II seen in my forum avatar.

I had thought! I wanted a Springfield EMP in .40 but that chambering wasn't on the Roster and I was told "good luck finding it in 9" which was never a concern since I don't do 9 except in .357 Mag blah blah blah...

I like my Gov't-sized Springfield 1911s so I went with the 3" Kimber instead and was more than happy to have another .45. The gun's initial price is steep, but it's going on five years now and while carried more than shot it is shot four or five times a year to cycle fresh 230 grain HST. It's been 100% reliable, and is also a great point shooter (drawn quickly, pointed from waist level and squeezed), too.

[Edit: The 3" Kimber Ultra CDP II uses a dual recoil spring arrangement, but written in the Kimber "Operational Guide" supplied with the gun there is a Spring Replacement Chart that suggests changing the 18# recoil spring (singular) every 1800 rounds. No mention of the inner recoil spring (I've never seen it) change interval other than the following: "The custom shop will replace both springs if you send... the complete assembly to Yonkers, however, the double spring assembly is normally replaced as a complete unit."] Whatever that means. I have changed the outer spring three times in four years... Again, the gun does not see the round count that my two steel, Gov't-sized guns do.

I'll shoot 25 rounds through my Ultra four or five times per year as I mentioned earlier... but I put at least 1000 rounds per month through my Gov't-sized pistols. There is not much difference in shooting the three. They're all hot rods.

I'm gonna lobby for the G39. Not 45 Auto but 45 GAP. Basically the same ballistics in a G26 sized gun. I carry it and more importantly shoot it often and it is superb.

Get it if you reload. Good defensive ammo is available for it too (Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST, etc)

I change the coaxial recoil spring arrangement's outer spring every +/-500 cycles (including loading and unloading slide cycles) and it's inner spring change is recommended every 1500 cycles. It's about due.

Quick question - who makes the grips on the 1911 you show on top left? They abit thicker than most? Thanks -

So as not to do too much high-jacking, I've had a Detonics since about 1979 (cost all of $150.00 back then) and although it's a bit heavy I like the shorter grip. I wish someone would come out with that grip length in an alloy framed 1911, the Officers model grip is too long for my CCW tastes. I have a Defender that sooner or later is going to someone to shorten by about 1".
