    Shooting without corrective glasses

At 51, my eyesight sucks. I wear contacts because I am nearsighted and I have almost perfect vision at distance but the contacts distort my near vision. So when I look at my front sight, I can barely make it out.

I've been shooting this way for several years and have gotten quite good at shooting longer range without ever really seeing the front sight very clearly. It's almost like I am guessing where the tritium insert is on my Ameriglo sights are which is the POI. Somehow, I've gotten quite good at guessing . I can hit the 9 and 10 ring pretty consistently at 25 yds.

Recently, tried shooting with reading glasses which makes the front sight crystal clear. It's amazing how easy it is to make good hits when able to see the front sight clearly.

My dilemma is this: do I continue to train without using reading glasses like I've been doing? Or say screw it and start wearing reading glasses to the range? My fear is that I will become dependent on them and if I ever need to use my pistol in self defense (unlikely but you never know, I carry everyday), I won't have my reading glasses on.

Wondering if my brain will detrain and when it sees a blurry front sight, it just won't know what to do as opposed to training through the blurriness.

Anyone with bad vision specifically train with it to overcome it?

I don't wear prescription glasses.. I do need reading glasses... I can see targets clearly out past 100 yards .. My pistol sites (Tru-glo tfo or tfx) without reading glasses are blurry but targets are sharp... With reading glasses sites are sharp but targets blurry,,, even at 7 yards distance... I practice mostly (90%) without reading glasses,,, trying to focus on the front site and target with the rear site blurred... My black front sites are mostly unusable and are being replaced or painted white... I will not be wearing my reading glasses in a CCW event so I don't practice that way.... I'm just lucky ,, I get to practice alot .. 😃😃
        Cheers...

There are a few past threads on this subject with quite a bit of useful info -

I decided not to use corrective glasses because I figured if I ever had to defend myself, my glasses would not be available or lost in a skirmish.

I use these Elvex safety glasses....like readers, but more eye coverage. Cheap, look fine, and they work.

My normal eyeglass/reader prescription is 2.25 , but just using the Elvex 1.0 or 1.5 works great for the front sight. If you use reduced diopter power like this, you can still make out the target in the background without it being grossly distorted

Thanks I'm going to try that.
Probably going to Walmart and try on a couple different pairs and see what's ones work the best before I order them.

I am near sighted and have almost always worn -2.50 contacts. Now at my age I have perfect far field vision with the lenses but need about 1.75 reading glasses if I want to do close in work (or take my contacts off where I can still see very close in). I now wear -2.00 contacts and my far field vision is just the slightest bit blurry but I can still see fine down to about 12". This is a good compromise for shooting because I can easily see the front dot of the handgun to line it up and still see "normally" with both eyes open.

I am at an impass with this problem. I have serious prescription glasses. With bifocals, I have to tilt head way back to get clear sights. What I plan to do is ask my optometrist for computer glasses, as in further distance than reading and bifocals, and have them place the pupil higher up on the lenses for better posture for shooting.

                    In theory, it might work.
I dreamed of owning a (insert off roster gun here)...

Oh yeah....then the earth splits open with me on one side and the (off roster gun) on the other. Then appeared a large red-glowing pit with gavin newscum, diane frankenstein and governor "brown the drain" at the bottom of it, waving their pitchforks at me.

                      Heres my strategy.....

I use corrected shooting glasses when practicing....makes it easier to see what i'm doing wrong.

Then for the nightstand weapon i make sure its got a front sight I can see...like a big dot or TFO style.

Makes sense in a gun fight..... but a legal fight, not so much.

You are near sighted, that is perfect for iron sights.
No lenses, no contacts and you should be good to go!

If you are in reasonable fear of imminent death or great bodily injury, what does eyesight have to do with the intentional use of deadly force to stop that threat? Stop spreading FUD.
