Mare's Leg / Ranch Hand availability?

First post here in years and yes, I did use the search function.

For some time it WAS the opinion of CA DOJ BOF that the action of a Mare's Leg / Rossi Ranch Hand type firearm placed it in the "Single action" category or "bolt action" thus making it fall into the exempted category of the handgun roster. I do not know it this is still the case and my best personal contact at DOJ BOF has moved to a different department so I am without a contact.

What is the general census and what we have seen as buyers in CA? Anyone done this recently? The last one I personally saw transferred in the Shasta County area was back in the SSE days.

    So.... Census?

    Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure it has to be ‘single-shot’ from factory.
Not that it would be difficult for Rossi to import them blocked for CA.

Last I saw any was a few years ago, shame on me for not snagging a .357

      Tag for responses.

Was told by lgs that plugging the tube doesn't make it single shot.

That is how they were sold with a plug in magazine tube.

There are a few LGS in CA that still sell them. They just plug the tube. I believe UGI Imports does this but you will have to contact them yourself. I am planning to buy one this summer and was going to contact them then.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

Some CA FFL dealers will still transfer them under SSE2.

Because there is no legal definition of "bolt-action" it can be argued that a "lever-action" or a "pump-action" is a type of "bolt-action", since they all require manually operating a handle to operate the firearm's bolt/bolt-carrier group.

Therefore, simply blocking/plugging (insert dowel in tube) the fixed tubular magazine so that it can not accept any cartridges will make the dimensionally compliant manually operated handgun into a bolt-action single-shot pistol and would then fall under SSE2.

That said, not many CA FFL dealers (that are still around. most of them moved out-of-state) hold this viewpoint, so the hardest part is finding a CA FFL dealer willing to do it.

                Exactly this ^^

I recall seeing the Henry Mare's leg, and occasional Rossi Ranch Hands being sold new at Crossroads Gun shows within the last few years.

It really does depend on whether the FFL wants to deal with any potential grief that their local CADOJ inspector might give them.

I see a lot of FFL's just want to stay under the radar as much as possible (can't say that I blame them), so finding one that will sell them is the hard part.
