USPSA Revolver

I currently have a 627 V Comp in jail as well as a 5" 627 Performance Center in my collection. I would like to try out the revolver division in USPSA. I'd like to ask my seasoned shooters if you use moonclips or speedloaders. I've done some research and see the benefits of both.

Moon clips loaded with eight 38 special rounds are relatively difficult to reload, but fly out cylinder ease (less risk of a round not coming out of the cylinder while attempting to eject brass). Whereas, speedloaders in theory have less wiggle and make for easier reloads, but risk loose rounds not ejecting properly. I am slowly building a basic kit and figure I would ask the experts first.

I have only seen moonclips used by revolver shooters.

The good news is if you shoot revolver you will probably come in first place since there is generally only one person shooting revolver per match.

Further research seems to be moon clips are the way to go.

I shot a few USPSA matches with revolver, S&W 929, when my primary Limited gun was having trigger work done and my backup had the rear sight work itself lose a day before the match. I shot one more match after that just for fun, then reverted back to Limited.

Between moon clips and speed loaders there is no contest. Moon clips win hands down. If you look at ICORE, some more restrictive divisions mandate speed loaders, so moon clips are seen as a clear advantage and are reserved for their open/limited divisions.

Also, people who shoot 627 shoot minor (shooting major would limit them to 6 rounds) and the more seasoned ones will shoot 38 S&W or Short Colt (not sure which one it is). This round is much shorter, similar to the length of 9mm, so it's faster for reloads. It's the reason 929 is very popular - short and fast-to-reload round out of the box.

38 special has relatively loose tolerances on the outer diameter of the case. I'd reccomend getting a variety of sizes of your moon clips so that you can get a snug fit that isn't too tight.

Most people I know always look at how they compare to the top shooter(s) regardless of division or class, particularly when shooting divisions with very few people.

There is a lot of skill outside of pulling the trigger that will significantly affect the scores. Those skills need to be improved to move up the classes and those skills are best measured against top guys, regardless of the nuances of gear.

IVC - I wonder if it was you who I saw at a local USPSA match shooting the 929 (father and son combo). If so, you are part of the reason I'm considering this. Thank you for your input, I am definitely go to go the moonclip route. That is some very interesting perspective on the ICORE rules.

It's not me - I have two young daughters and they don't shoot USPSA. Last time I shot Revolver (division, that is, not the gun) was last year in the fall. Also, I shoot at Pala, which is way south from you. You were likely at Piru (?)
