    Springfield Armory Professional Malfunctioning

Took my SA Professional to the range this weekend, I know this gun is "hard fit" and is suppose to be a very tight fit. I cannot rack the slide by hand and have to push it with front end with my hand to "break" the lock before I can rack the slide.

What surprised me was the malfunctioning when I took it to the range. The problem got progressively worse. At first everything was fine, two magazines later, the slide refused to lock on an empty mag. This happened to both the magazines that came with the gun and a Tripp Cobra mag. 2 to 3 mags later, the gun began stove piping the last round. This keep happening until around 50 rounds. Then failure to eject combined with the hammer not dropping when I pull the trigger, or the hammer falling to half cock. This FTE and hammer not dropping or just to half cock happened consistently with every magazine I fed the gun (both OEM and Tripp) and now not only on the last round. It happened enough to have me feel that the gun was unsafe to shoot and abort the shooting session.

Is this expected for "hard fit" handguns (SACS, Les Baer,..etc). This is my first semi custom gun. I've had STI/Caspian, Para-Ord, Glock, SIGs in the past and not one malfunctioned like this.

Should I just try to shoot more rounds into the gun to "break" it in or is this NOT typical behavior for this type of gun. A bit disconcerting for a gun to behave like this when it was said to go through a "total reliability tune" per SACS.

    Anyone has a similar experience?

A properly built gun that has a tight fitting barrel should function flawlessly from round 1. The barrels are fit slightly over tight because they will loosen up slightly to what would be the appropriate fit after about 50-100 rounds.

    Send it in to Springfield.

I did not have a similar experience and quite the opposite.....all six factory magazines and 5 Wilson combat magazines worked fine with both a mix of FMJ and HP and with at least 1000 rounds down range with no hiccups or at all. I would recommend trying Wilson combat or another high quality magazine with regards to the stove piping. Concerning the hammer not dropping I would make sure you have a secure grip on the grip safety when firing. If these suggestions do not help call S.A. and they will gladly fix it on their dime. The gun will loosen up over time as you continue to shoot it. It is the most reliable horse in my stable.

Thank you for the replies. I will call Springfield tomorrow. Is their customer service number the same for Custom Shop guns?

Tight and a "reliable" 1911 are mutually exclusive....

            Did you buy this used?

S.A. pro comes with 6 mags. Why would you be shooting a Tripp mag?

Something is fishy about this story.

That said, Springfield takes care of their guns. Send it in.

I was shooting it with the included six mags AND a tripp magazine that my friend had, to see if mags were the issue. We were shooting together. Below is a pic of one of the malfunctions. I wished I took one for every kind of malfunction I encountered to fully document. This is the first time I took it out to the range. No modifications except changing the cocobolo grips to g10s. Got it BRAND NEW from Ammo Bros in Ontario two weeks ago.

Did you clean it and lube it before shooting?
Or did you just take it out of the box, load the mags, and start shooting?
                Reloads or factory rounds?

Straight out of the box. I used Winchester 230 grain range fodder.

Inspect the ejector, make sure it is not broken or loose. Adjust extractor tension. Stop riding the slide stop. Eat some wheaties.

                      sa pro

try lubing it and give it another shot. when the gun is sitting in the box, it can get very dry.

All my SA 1911 are 9mm, but the guns are not "lubed" as delivered. They are coated in a heavier compound that I assume is to protect against corrosion prior to sale. You need to at least field strip and lube with any one of the decent gun lubes: Slip, Mil-comm, bear grease, ... Detail strip would not be a bad idea, but not necessary. Lube, take it to the range and then if you have issues call SA.

Did you try multiple types of ammo? When one of my 9mm 1911s was new, I was having similar issues when using 115gr 9mm. I ran 100 rds of 147gr 9mm through it, and it now runs great with just about anything.
