    Vietnam 1968 - This big-bore weapon was captured by 3rd Division Marines during an engagement with the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) near Dong Ha. The “big gun” has been fashioned from a M-79 grenade launcher and is equipped with a fast-draw spring holster made from a cut-down U. S. pistol holster. Photo by LCpl Bob Stetson

      Seems like it would be hard to handle the recoil.

      Kinda dumb to cut down an M-79 unless it was damaged in a fire-fight, and that's the only way they could get it to fire. Maybe it was hit in the barrel midway by an AK round, and that is how short they had to cut it.

          they could use it to make a booby trap and tie it to a tree with a trip wire set to fire when a vehicle comes down a road

              The grenade is armed after spinning a number of times. It is a safety feature to prevent it from going off near the shooter.

              edit - looks like it arms after 8 feet.

                      40mm grenade cartridges have a different design than typical metallic ammo. They have a second chamber in the case that greatly decreases the pressure and recoil. Firing one is pretty quiet and very mild.
