    1911

I'm looking for a company that makes reliably good Colt 1911s in the 500-800$ range. Though obviously makers like Kimber make great 1911s, I need something more in my price range.

Also, do any 1911s have double stacked magazines, so you can fit 10+ rounds in the magazine?

Thanks a lot for your advice

Well if you're looking for 1911 w/ the capacity of 10+ there's the Para Ordnance line of 1911 types. I haven't shot one yet, but maybe someone else can give you a review.

Springfield sounds like your company. they range from $450 and up. You can snag a nice loaded model for $700.

Shop guns, ammo, and accessories at Impact Guns — online since 1992. Handguns, AR-15s, AK pistols, hunting rifles, and more from top brands. Expert staff, competitive prices, ships to your local FFL.

The Kimber ten 1911 has a ten round double stack mag. Takes a little getting use to but its a good shooter. But for youre price i would suggest the low end Kimbers or Springfield armory 1911 are youre best bet.

Chip McCormick makes affordable single stack 10 rounders. That's all I use in my Springfields.

Midway and Brownells has them fairly cheap. Sportsmans Guide has them on occasion also, usually for well under $20.

Get an entry level Springfield (like a GI). You can always swap out parts or have a gunsmith work on it once you've gotten comfortable with it. By then, you should be familiar enough to know specifically what you want done.

As far as double-stack 1911 pistols, Para-Ordnance makes a few. You won't be getting a 10+ magazine however, you'd only get the 10 rounder. With almost every brand, you'll have your fans and your dissenters. My Para-Ord P14 has been nothing but a joy.

you don't want the double stack 10rd model 1911's. they are oddballs. Take special mags, etc.
also, kimber ain't that great- overpriced series 80 gun. get a springfield, they are decent for the price. the best part is they are a series 70!

Ooops sorry, I missed that 10+ round request. In that case forget the springfield.

I would like to suggest the CZ97b if you are not heart set on a 1911. Holds 10+1, built like a tank and VERY accurate. Here is mine.....

Ok, as said Para Ordnance is going to be your best bet for double stack 1911. I personally own the Nite Hawg; it's essentially a sub compact 1911 with everything black or blued (even the barrel hood) and comes with tritium night sights and to top it all off it holds 10+1 rounds of .45acp (it runs around $1k after tax and DROS). It is VERY well balanced, but I have long hands and I tend to find it slightly too small for my liking as a practice gun; but when I grab a gun at home for casual carrying or if I ever had to choose a gun for CCW it would be my first choice. My Springfrield Mil-Spec 1911 came out to just over $600 after tax and DROS (I think it was like $609 at Turners). It fits my hands perfectly, aims well, and after being broken in it is the nicest smoothest functioning gun I own. It really is the best bang for the buck 1911 wise (that I could find) and I have not regretted it yet.

If it's your first 1911 I would suggest against the double stack variants, as they are either going to be small and awkward or they are going to be gimped mags that might have questionable feeding. Get a good old fashioned single stack, 7+1 round, Government size 1911. Springfield makes a great one in your price range and I think you will be very happy with it. It's a design over a 100 years old and still going strong, can't go wrong with it. It's simplicity is what makes it so great.

Kimber, Springfield, STI, and Para-Ordnance all make double stack 1911s, but I'd suggest against them for a number of reasons. Someone already pointed out that you need special magazines and parts can be harder to get.

Furthermore, if you can't do the job with 9 rounds of 45 you shouldn't be carrying a gun. I (and most others) carry with one in the chamber and an 8 rd. McCormick mag and if there came a time I couldn't "handle the job" with 9 rounds of SXTs I'd have to say I was outgunned and outclassed and those 2 more rounds weren't gonna do much for me. Those 8rd. mags are also flush, so you can keep your traditional 1911 grip dimensions and not have a mag hanging out an inch and a half below your magwell. In the price range you specified a Springfield would be your best bet, though you may also find a used Kimber or Colt in that range.

field strip the pistol and throw the slide and frame at them

I vote for the Kimber Custom II or Custom TLE II, because mine works fine.
But, there is still a chance the mass production 1911 .45 won't work right, so go with the company that has great cusotmer service, in case you need it.

I vote Springfield. I had a Mil-spec that was nothing but reliable and accurate.

Plus, Springfields don't have the lame firing pin safeties that Kimbers and S&Ws have.

That's what combat/speed reloads are for. I didn't say you shouldn't carry an extra magazine, I said you don't need 10+1 *in* your gun. If you're just standing in one spot blowing 11 rounds at somebody without moving to C&C and a chance to survey your targets and reload... well... chances are you're either the bad guy, or when you heard about the zombies on CBS you should have gone to the AR/shotgun safe instead of the 1911 on your nightstand?

I don't know lol... you pose a good question, but really... I guess my only response would be what I would do, which like I said, is use those 9 rounds wisely while moving to C&C where I could reload and figure out how I ended up in a hypothetical zombie situation without my AR.
