To buy a new in the box mass production gun as an investment will take a long time to make a profit on . So investment may be wrong wording . I myself do have semi autos but my prefernce is in revolvers , Hard to beat a good .357 for personal defense.

SW1911PD. Excellent 1911. There's people on forums who have good luck with Kimber 1911's, but everyone I know in person won't touch'em because of personal problems.

          My choice

I'd go with the S&W myself. I think the Kimber is overpriced for what you get, and I have no desire for a laser grip on my gun. The S&W 1911s have achieved a better reputation than Kimber for reliability, I believe.

Investment is actually the correct wording my friend. Anytime u buy a product you are investing your money into what many people hope to be a long service life. So if the kimber goes down, is less reliable and has more repair issues than the s&w then the s&w would in the long term cost less. Making the s&w the better investment.

Regardless of which 1911 you pick. Please double check and make sure it's on the CA DOJ Roster of Approved Handguns before buying it off GunBroker or out of state to be shipped into CA. If you're buying from a local shop, then it shouldn't be a worry.

Personally, I'd be looking at a Wilson Combat, Les Baer, or Springfield 1911.
