I have a Ruger P89 and it's reliable and sturdy. It's a decent self-defense gun but for target shooting it's at the bottom of the list of the guns I own. I have enough confidence in it that I just replaced by Sig 226 with the P89 as my home SD weapon. It's not a tack driver but then again the longest straight line in my house is only about 15 yards.

Maybe I missed it but what's the intended use of the pistol by the OP? And how many rounds are going to be put through it each year?

      All three deserve a look:
      Hi-Point C9
      Bersa Firestorm
      S&W SD9VE

Hi Points are awesome, slightly uglier than a Glock, but I think they have Gaston beat in the ergonomics department - great warranty and you still have $ for ammo. Should feed HP’s well enough, if you aren’t sure you can load the chamber with a premium round and fill the magazine with FMJ’s (that came from an article that had Lou Ferigno and I believe the Beretta Tomcat).

I can't help it but I think Hi Points are clunky. I haven't shot one but a local dealer had them on sale and I handled them. I handled a 45 that had a recoil spring so heavy I could hardly rack the slide. The 9mm was a bit better. They might go bang but that's about it. I would try and save some more for something better.

Does your disability inhibit your ability to fire a bigger weapon?

For $250 I’d look at a Mossberg Maverick 12ga. If your disability allows it.

Surprised nobody mentioned saving up a little longer for something else.

Another vote for the S&W SD9VE.
And it eats home-cast lead no problemo, if you are a reloader.
