Please clarify:

Does this mean sometimes the cylinder turns correctly and locks into place
or
Does this mean that sometimes it fires and sometimes it doesn't.

These are two different problems.

If the gun checks out fine in the lockup and it only fails to set off the round in double action, your hammer spring might be weak.

I’d also look into the end of the transfer bar to see if part of it is missing or grounded/polished off.

What brand ammo were you shooting? We’re they reloads or factory?

Those were nice guns. AZ is full of gunsmiths so just look it up.

Change out the mainspring - takes 30 seconds, costs $8.00 and all you have to remove is the grips. If that doesn't take care of the problem it's probably the hand, but on Rugers the hand is a pretty sizeable chunk of metal and hardly ever gets lazy.

Ruger has a service center in Prescott AZ. I have not heard of Ruger standing behind any of their guns, unless it has been hacked on. Do a google search on their service center fixing issues. https://www.ruger.com/dataProcess/customerService/

Since the OP has not updated us, it would seem that it is time to speculate.

I will propose that the timing is just fine, that the gun needs nothing but a good cleaning, especially the back of the cylinder and ejector star.
Misfires in DA only when everything else works fine is a classic sign of built-up gunk between these parts.
The star ends up sitting on a cushion of gunk instead of resting solidly on the back of the cylinder.
This cushions the strike of the firing pin.

The distance the hammer travels back and then releases is less in DA, compared to SA when the hammer is cocked all the way back.
The hammer spring is compressed less in DA than in SA and so the DA hammer hit to the firing pin is weaker.
That's why it misfires in DA only.

The tight precision fit of parts that we all like means that the parts have to be kept clean to work.

I'd try to post this up on a Ruger forum. Someone there might know a Ruger specific gunsmith that can help. I bought an old Security Six police trade in last year and it's a tank. One of my favorite revolvers. Good luck.

If you have off set primer strikes, yes, that shows a timing problem.
However, when the hammer is pulled all the way back to cock for SA fire, you say that the cylinder times up right and the gun fires OK.
So, the hand / ratchet points / ejector star / cylinder and hammer should all be good.
We go to the DA sear next, item 29 that is pushed by 31 and 32:


My further speculation is that this part is not engaging the hammer correctly.
Could just be gunk binding the spring and plunger.
The parts are robust and not prone to wearing out or early failure.

Too bad you are not closer, this should not be hard to fix.

I recommended this to the OP but he said it was not an option. I am curious as to know as why Ruger told him they will not fix it. They only time I have heard of them not fixing one of their guns is when the frame is soon out of spec they can't fix it. Then they will give you a discount.

I have also heard they will replace your aftermarket parts as well
