    Rust on my new GP100

I've only had the revolver for about 3 months and it seems to have developed surface rust on the barrel. I cleaned it well when I brought it home and oiled it. After taking to the range once, I cleaned it again and oiled the surface lightly and stored it away in a Ruger case lined with foam. My guess the foam has some moisture in it? The revolver had light discolorations where the foam made contact. Most of the discolorations I was able to buff out. But these rusty looking spots I cannot buff out. What do I do now? Use some steel wool? How do I protect it from further rusting?

It's hard to see on the first pic, but there is some rusty discoloration. Second pic shows more.

Storing it in a case lined with foam is the issue. The foam retains moisture and simply creates a humid environment. You can get the rust off using oil and brass wool. You shouldn’t have to apply much pressure and it should not scratch the surface as brass is softer than steel.

Yep, don't "store" in a foam lined case. 0000 wool should do it but don't be a gorilla . . .take your time.

Whats a better way of storing it if not in a foam case?

I use eezox and a silicon impregnated gun sock.

I wanted to wrap the revolver in silicone impregnated cloth, but I've read that, it too can trap moisture after silicone dries out.

I live in a super humid environment on the ocean. For me, the only way I eliminated all issues was putting the "golden rods" heater bars in my safe, tearing out the foam storage racks in my safe (i actually used cedar fence boards because of low cost and built wood racks to fit inside), and putting all rifles in the silicone gun socks while in the safe.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

                    OP

Flitz paste the entire revolver and put it in a silicone sock and back in the box.
Flitz will take those little spots right out.
The Flitz will also protect the finish.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll be keeping the GP100 out of the case from now on and store it in a silicone infused sock. My Citadel 1911 was also stored in a foamed case, but has no rust. I'm guessing bluing is not a good rust protector. Lesson learned.

+1 for Eezox. It's a great rust preventative; has helped keep the rust off my carbon steel items.

I used to have a blued GP100. Left it inside my car when I was hunting in Maine for a week. Sure enough rust spots were all over the gun. Check under the grips. Main reason why I like stainless revolvers that will be carried and used in wet areas.
