I have a 12-1 , the frame is the same thickness as a J frame.
The grips are also slimmer than a K frame due to the J frame size in the grip area.
These were originally made for the Air Force who wanted lighter gear for pilots, I think due to the increased speeds and g forces of newer fighter planes.
The 12-0 had an aluminum cylinder which did not hold up to regular shooting use.
The Air Force had a special downloaded round for use with the aluminum cylinders, but still the cylinder failed.
Most 12-0 were destroyed when they were removed from service, making them a rare find these days.
The 12-1 was an improved version with a steel cylinder so all ammo could be used.

I realize you might be joking but I swear this forum revolves way too much around fanboi debate on which is the best concealed carry/carry/home protection gun I'll likely never use in my life vs. the N frame i'll use to fill a tag every year.
You don't understand how many deadly pistoleros participate on this forum. Each one champion shooters and dangerous fellas!

Those of us who carry as backup while hunting or traipsing, who love N frames, and who enjoy shooting for accuracy at the range just can't keep up.

I have to go read 8 or 9 pages of why Glocks are great to draw me some enthusiasm.

Yeah, my post was slightly tongue-in-cheek. I've owned all but the X-frame -- I've had a J-frame 642, a K-frame 67-5 4", an L-frame 686 Talo 5", and an N-frame 29-10 4". All outstanding revolvers, but I tip my hat to the K-frame above all others. Just so svelte and streamlined for its capability.

I'll also add that while K frames and L frames are very similar in size and shape, I just learned that 3 digit designations like 686, etc. are L frames while 2 digits like 66 are K frames. Not always, but like 95%+.

L and K frames take same size grips for those that don't know.

Speaking of grips, there are round butt and square butt frames, too.
                These take different grips.
The J, K, L and N frames could be had with either type, with usually the round butt used on shorter barrel guns.

Later frames like the X went all round butt, since this offered more grip choices to the owner.
