If I did use it for HD it would be because:

    1. It has superior barrier penetration ability over 9 mm, .40 S & W and .45 ACP but has similar ballistic gelatin penetration characteristics to the same ammo.
    2. It is louder than 9 mm, .40 S & W and .45 ACP so it is going to get a bad guys attention. The loudness of the round may contribute to a psychological incapacitation as well and that may lessen the need for additional shots.
    3. Energy transfer. 506 ft. lbs. of energy/1,350 feet per second at the muzzle is a good thing. That round is going to transfer more energy to the bad guy (getting his attention) than most other common pistol rounds.

    Notes:

    1. Muzzle flash is dependent on the ammo. Some ammo has a nice bright big muzzle flash and some has hardly any muzzle flash at all.

I have a sig 226 in 357sig love the cartridge. If you reload and intend to use it for self defense where you might discharge a round in low light,I would recommend using Unique. I use starline brass,CCI primer, 147 grain Golddot
and near max charge of Unique powder. This combination gave me the best accuracy with a tiny blue flame for a muzzle flash.

When I carry, nine times out of ten it is one of my Glock 33s (I own three of them). Here is my OD one:
