    Colt Python legality

Can someone let me know what the deal is with the colt python. I just checked the DOJ approved list. Is it only stainless 6" pythons that are allowed? No royal blues, 4" , or other combinations of lengths/finishes? It just seems odd to have that one specific configuration legal while the others aren't. BTW I am seeking a 6" royal blue in excellent condition if you guys have any leads - I'm located in Southern CA.

    thanks,
    Chris

    List is what it is.
Blued model are not listed. So no go.
Same mechanical function and dimension but gotta pony up the dough for listing. It was the goal of CA DOJ to slice away our selection little bit at a time.

Your only hope is finding one in private sale.

    Good luck.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

Colt management has gone down the drain over the years. The newer owners thought the name would carry the company. A few years ago Colt wouldn't let this slip by, they probably would have a majority of the finishes and models on the DOJ list but the mismanagement and degrading customer service is just bringing the company down. Colt still is a great pistol no doubt, but I'm sure more people would consider doing business with them if their customer service and quality control was more pleasurable to deal with.

The listed gun is a Colt Python Elite Custom Shop model in SS with a 6" barrel.

No other Pythons are listed. You must PPT them only.

I just today picked up a 4" from 4 Seasons Outfitters in San Luis Obispo..........

          .....for $575

They do have a 6" also, for $940 or 970, I couldn't read the tag very well. It's perhaps 85-90% outside, but still shiny and perfectly slick internally.

I heard of some dealers in the past DROS'ing guns that were identical to the ones on the list (caliber, bbl length) but were different finishes than whats on the list. But again, im not one of those dealers

For the cost, quality, and the likely ridiculous wait in ordering a new Python Elite from Colt, you would do better to order a Smith & Wesson Performance Center gun in a similar medium sized frame. The Performance Center guns have a better trigger, fit, and finish than the Elite Pythons.

From the in-my-hands observation of a new Elite, compared to several Pythons in my collecton (from my earliest being a 1961 "hollow-lug" "skinny-horse" blued Python, along with several other various lengthed barrel blued, nickle, and stainless models, and from what I have heard of those who have shot the newer Elite models quite regularly, the Elite is just not made the same way as the older Pythons. The triggers are not as smooth and the quality of the work is a lot rougher. The one I got my hands on looked more comparable to the nice, but rough around the edges Anaconda than what a true Python should be. It looked more like a Colt King Cobra to me than the quality I had come to expect of a Python.

Oh, and no, in advance, I do not want to part with any of my constrictors.

              .

There is more than a different color between the typical Python and the Python elite

Thanks for the replies everyone...I was afraid to hear that answer about the DOJ list but I guess I'll keep looking for a python in CA.

Army - thanks for the heads up. I'll probably pass based on the condition - I'm looking for something in excellent/like new condition.

                    keep looking

I was in the same spot a year or two back. The gun you are looking for is out there. I wouln't settle for less. I believe that all the previous posts are accurate-you will need to find one via PPT, and you will pay a premium. I actually found one on this board from a collector 6" royal blue, my finest revolver. Keep looking, it's worth the effort. You are in the right place.

I just hope I don't have to wait too long...1911's tend to catch my eye too...I'm already in the same situation with the Colt Delta Elite and 9mm government. Damn that DOJ list. For now I'm just gonna keep throwing the bait($$$) out and hoping someone in CA decides to part with one of those safe queens.

How much bait ($$$) are you putting out?
