Those little barcodes squares can hold a heck of a lot of information but what on Earth could they possibly be listing there other than
what plant it was made at,
if there's more than one making that type of revolver.
who made the frame
who put it all together
date of manufacturer
maybe who did the test shooting
where was going to be shipped
and of course re listing of the gun serial number.
I know there are federal laws against removing serial numbers but I don't think they're written to include barcodes.
but I'm not a lawyer so I don't know for sure.
Maybe you should write a letter saying, you don't want "the mark of Satan" on your pistol, in the style of a old timey fire and brimstone preacher. -

Those hold a key to a whole new world. We use them to track medical instruments. It can tell us material lot numbers of each component, which operator performed which operation, Revisions, inspections serial/lot numbers, purchaser, etc. This info is moot to the end user, but if you ever need warranty or recall work, this info is very helpful to the manufacturer. It provides direct connection to an employee who may have failed an inspection causing a failure in the field.Comment

Looks like a QR code. Scan it with your smart phone. See what it says.Comment

Wow, never saw that on a gun before. I suspect that is for S&W's reference if the gun ever returns for a failure or repair. It may includes data on material batches and drawings revisions for key parts, as well as the obvious model data.
Or it could just say "Made in America by XXXXX"

From your pic:
It's not recognized as a commercial QR code, they might have their own way of encoding the data.
Sigs have stickers with QR codes, too.Comment

Use an app and scan it and see what's there...I dreamed of owning a (insert off roster gun here)...
Oh yeah....then the earth splits open with me on one side and the (off roster gun) on the other. Then appeared a large red-glowing pit with gavin newscum, diane frankenstein and governor "brown the drain" at the bottom of it, waving their pitchforks at me.
