    S&W 586 Front Sight Questions

So, I just bought a brand new S&W 586. I absolutely love the revolver but I hate the front sight blade with that red insert. I have a really hard time getting a good sight picture with it and wish it had a dot like on my M9 and 1911 so I had something to focus on and make a crystal clear front sight tip.

So, my question is this, what do you guys think is the best front sight for the 586 and why?

For posterity, I do believe my front sight blade is pinned and therefore replaceable.

Yeah, I saw those using Google. Have you tried that one? I guess I was thinking more like a white paint dot like I'm used to.

Not on that gun, I have used their front sights on different pistols. Pretty much the same thing, they are highly visible and with a blacked out rear the front really stands out.

Interesting, I might have to give that a try. In the meantime, I was seriously considering just using a paint pen and putting a dot in the center of that red insert.

Those look almost exactly what I was looking for.

Edit: I see they have 4 different sights for the K,L, and N frame revolvers? Mine's an L frame, but I can't figure out which one is correct.

Dawson Fiber Sight is extremely easy to see, highest contrast.
Hi-Viz is crap, compared to Dawson

                what You need
TEKTON 66061 1/16-Inch Roll Pin Punch
Irwin Tools 80154 No. 54 General Purpose HSS Wire Drill Bits
2mm or so, larger drill bit
                Small C-cramp
                Should buy spare sight pin

                (1) punch out current Pin (use broken drill bit or something)
                (2) fix new sight by C-cramp
                (3) cutting oil
                (4) slowly drill from both side
                (5) remove new sight, ream a little by larger drill bit
                (6) fix new sight, add oil, punch in the pin

Yeah, I'd probably pay a gunsmith to do it properly. I can put together an AR, but my Smith is so pretty I don't wanna risk it...

Is it just me, or does that red insert front blade kinda suck?

That’s the nice feature of the new 586/686, you can change the front sight. Unlike the early dash models the front sight is fix.

Well for the folks who wanted colors in years gone by, they were better than a basic black post. Visibility-wise, they're out-shined by fiber optic sights, but then they're not as fragile either. I hate white dot sights, but the first time I held up a gun with an FO front I was like "Wow!"

Personally my mostest bestest front sight on a 586 would be one of the factory four-position adjustables. For target shooting & competition I get along just fine with basic squared-off black-on-black sights. For close encounters of the deadly kind I prefer something brighter & less precise.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

I'd honestly almost prefer to have a straight black ramp over the one with the red insert.
