I just got an extended slide release from Wilson Combat for my Springfield Armory 1911 loaded. I installed the slide release and the slide sticks when I attempt to rack it back as if something is blocking it from going back and when I do get it to rack back and release the slide forward I am unable to flip the ambi safety up. What could it be?

1911 - Aftermarket slide release issues

Aftermarket parts often need fitting. There are a zillion YT vids on fitting a new safety. My Marketplace Feedback: https://www.calguns.net/forum/market...k#post54003245 -
You may have to fit the barrel feet to the slide stop. The slide stop is a key figment point for accuracy and overall reliability.Comment

Did you measure the pin diameter prior to ordering your after market slide stop? Most of the time the stock slide stop for SA 1911 are .197-.198”. If your barrel feet are fitted tightly on this size and you install a .200” it may cause problems. Usually the loaded model has enough room that a .200” will drop right in.
Are you sure you installed it correctly as in through the barrel link?
Did you try function checking without a magazine in the gun?Last edited by JTROKS; 11-25-2017, 11:19 AM.The wise man said just find your place

Have you tried to re-install the original slide release and verify that it still functions as before to be sure you're putting it all back correctly?
I installed three Wilson Combat aftermarket parts in my Springfield loaded model recently, the extended mag release, extended slide release and extended ambi safety. All working nicely now.
The mag release needed no fitting. The extended slide release needed minor filing to fit with the small file shown in pic below. The extended safety was the most work which took the most filing and more disassembly/reassembly each time until it fit just right. But in my opinion better to be able to do the fine fitting work than have it too loose from the start.

I agree with Post#4. Springfield-Armory 1911 slide stop holes tend to be just a bit smaller than some other 1911 brands.
If you do need to fit the shaft, sand, emery-cloth, or machine the shaft, not the hole in the frame. Fit the relatively inexpensive part rather than the hard-to-replace frame/gun.(former) Glock and 1911 Armorer; LEO (now retired)Comment

Yes I have and works just fine with the original slide release. What part did you file on the extended slide release?Comment

The Wilson Combat extended slide release fits right in and taken out without force. Ill have to look at it again later on when I get home. Didnt spend so much time trying to trouble shoot it late last night and thought Id ask you guys for ideas. Thanks for the feed back fellas!I agree with Post#4. The pin diameter was OK on mine. It was the grove that the slide rides thru that needed to be opened just a tad. If you have a good set of calipers you can measure the pin diameter of the OEM vs the Wison. Then without assembling the whole action just try sliding the grove of the new release along the slide and be sure it goes easy.Comment

Right on. Ill go ahead and try that. Thanks brother! The pin diameter was OK on mine. It was the grove that the slide rides thru that needed to be opened just a tad. Chances are it is the diameter of the slide stop pin.
The issue of not being able to flip the thumb safety on is likely due to the fact that the slide is not going forward as much as before. This is probably related to the feet of the bottom lug of the barrel stopping a little sooner than before because the pin of the slide stop is larger.
The slide sticking when you try to rack it to the rear is likely because the front of the bottom lug of the barrel not clearing the slide stop pin easily. You can check by taking the slide off, flipping it upside down, putting the slide stop pin through the barrel link, and trying to move the slide stop pin from the feet of the bottom lug to the front. It may be sticking at the radius section of the bottom lug.
Some people actually stone the slide stop as oppose to the bottom lug in this situation.Hobbies: bla, bla, bla... Bought a Mosin Nagant... Guns, Guns, Guns...Comment

Thank you! Now it makes more sense!Chances are it is the diameter of the slide stop pin.
