P226 vs P229 grip and ergo differences

I want to pick up aHome defense and range pistol and shot a few guns at the range.

I really liked the 226 and 229. I had less muzzle flip and faster follow up shots with the 226. I was more accurate with the 229 and could reach the mag release and decocker controls without repositioning my hand. The 226 felt fuller in hand while the 229 just fit right.

Is it possible to get a new 226 and change the grip so that the reach matches the 229 I used?

What grips exactly did each of these guns have? That information will help us help you.

They are the same frame girth, the P229 will take P226 mags. And controls are the exact same distance. So the grips must have been the difference.

So yes, you could put slimmer grips on the P226, and/or grips with a deeper dished out rear strap.

You could go Hogue G10, Hogue aluminum, or Sig E2 grips.

If you go E2 grips, you would also need a new mainspring strut/spring/seat assembly. I am going to venture a guess that you shot a P229 with E2 grips.

      Were they both 9mm?

Like SkyHawk said, sounds like E2 grips to me. I put the E2 grips on my P226 and my P229 and liked them both better. Put E2's on my P220 Combat as well.

Easy to spot E2 grips, they do not have screws.

About $60 for the kit from Midway and others. A bit more directly from Sig.

Hogue grips look better and more expensive but go with what you prefer.

I do like the look of the Hogues myself, but the E2 grips are more deeply scooped out along the backstrap. That gets your fingers closer to the controls and trigger, and for some size hands it will make all the difference.

The E2 grips have a nice grippy texture without being overly aggressive. But they are a hassle to remove and install. I have them on a P229DAK and a P229 Enhanced Elite, and a P227 Carry. Most of my other Sigs sport Hogue G10s.

Get a Glock 19. SIGs are over priced pistols that come with truly awful triggers. Especially the 229, it has a ton of travel, no reset and feels like crap. Glocks come factory with 5lb pull, and with a 10 dollar spring kit you can make it to 3-4lbs pull with a very crisp break and reset. Oh, and they're only 400 dollars and you'll never break it. I have 23,000+ through mine and it's never broke.

Agreed. The E2 grips are designed to enhance overall performance. IMHO, they work well.

I put E2 grip on my P226 and it made it much more comfortable to shoot. The kit comes completely with new spring, strut, and seat to complete the installation. It takes a bit of work to install though, especially when new.

I also have Sig aluminum (by Hogue, I think) for my P226. It is a bit bigger than the E2, but slightly smaller than stock plastic grips.

Finally ordered my E2 today. I was fine with the stock grips until I got my CZ's. Now if find them a bit large for my girly hands.
