Whatever you do, do NOT go to Armstrong in Laguna Hills. I had them put a Dawson F/O front sight on my loaded target and it came back slightly off center and with one side mushed out where they beat the hell out of it with a punch rather than using a sight pusher which I had specifically asked if they had.

Their explanation was "these things are really hard to get it".

I guess I failed to ask the right questions. Thanks for the tip!!

I asked if they knew how to fit the front sight since I knew the issue with the dovetail needing work. They assured me they did and that they used a sight pusher once they matched the angle. Next time I need something similar I will seek out a different smith.

FWIW, I was able to use a small file to work the smashed up part back flat and to fit the sight a bit better. The profile of the base stuck out above the slide a bit on the sides.

Once done with that I used a bluing pen to touch it up and it looks fine now. This is a SA stainless loaded target. I used the same pen to touch up the edges of the adjustable sight where I round off the top of the rear blade. So far the pen bluing is holding up nicely.

But what do you do when a customers gun is overcut for a sight they want? A Dutchman repair will fit the bill.

One more thumbs up for Brett (Cifaldi Precision). What he doesn't mention here is that he trained under Will O'Hara and works with him. What he also doesn't mention here is that he is a proper machinist and that he works on professional grade equipment so he can pretty much make a 1911 out of a piece of metal and can do any fitting or installation to a proper spec.

I've had him do a "competition works" on my S&W 1911 and there was a real snag when it turned out S&W factory sights were not only non-standard, but the cut was too large, so standard sights couldn't be fitted by filing them down. He ended up doing a special process where he "grafted" a piece of metal, then recut the slide correctly for the new sights. It not only worked for installation of sights, but the seam is practically invisible even when I point it out to someone. Goes without saying that the trigger work was superb and that I have a sub-2lb competition trigger.

The only problem is that he will be getting busier and busier, so the wait times will go up for complete jobs.

Tanaka and O'Hara have good reps for 1911 work. DO NOT use Mike's, Oscars/Bain and Davis or whatever they call themselves now or Bolsa.
