    Check your ammo!

Saw these when I was picking up range brass yesterday. Figured someone had a bad day at the range...

Top one is a 40 S&W, bottom 9mm and it looks like they were both fired out of a 45.
It emphasizes the need to load the right ammo in the right handgun.

Wouldn’t they just fall out the barrel on a .45? If by some miracle they fed into the chamber to begin with...

At least the 9 should pass right thru

After accidentally loading a 9mm into a 40cal magazine and pulling the trigger, I color code all of my magazines with one drop of nail polish. Blue 9mm, orange 40 cal, yellow 45cal, 10mm White.

The 9mm won't fit in a .45, it falls right through but it will fit in a .40, and the .40 will fit in a .45 both causing bulged cases like your pic.

My uncle shot a 38 Super out of my 1911 chambered in 40S&W. The case was stuck in the chamber. I didn’t want my tuned extractor to jump the rim so I packed it away. When I got home it didn’t take much to get the expanded case out. It expanded to the bore of the 40 chamber and the case was sporting a good crack. Look very similar with the cases in the pic. The gun was fine.

Well, whether the 9mm will fall right thru a 45 or not they both expanded to the same 45 cal diameter so somehow, some way they had to have fired it out of a 45.

I found 3 pieces of .223 brass at a local shooting spot that appeared to have been fired out of a 7.62x39 chamber. Definitely an interesting looking piece of brass.
My son accidentally loaded some .308s in one of my 30/06 Garands. Unfortunately the only way to get it out was to shoot it. Case came out looking like a rimless .444 Marlin.

The first time I did range qualification for my CCW one of my guns was a Kahr PM-40

The lady sharing my station had a Kahr PM-9. I was so nervous I somehow got one of her PM-9 mags.

Fired first 5 .40 rounds then did a mag change as instructed. Next round hit the target tumbling sideways and my gun didn't cycle. Cleared, racked and fired again with the same result. Cleared again this time trapping the ejected shell in my hand.

                      Immediately knew I was screwed.

Fortunately they let me re-qualify that gun after every one else had finished.

Color coating your mags is a great idea (even if you only shoot one caliber)
Make sure your color coding does not cause the mag to bind.

Good reason to standardize on 9mm only.

Had an "instructor" do that while showing his student how to operate the guys new AK. Extractor missed the rim, and the instructor had no idea how to get the case out of the chamber (hint: cleaning rod is your friend.)
