Talking a new user down from buying a Desert Eagle

This fellow is a friend of my sons. He has bought a few rifles and shotguns.

Asked me advice on a semi handgun. I tell him try Sig, Beretta, Glock and if low money, try the S&W Sigma or whatever they are now.

I even tried to explain the fun of wheelguns. No go.

Well, he is hard over on buying a the Desert Eagle.

I got nothing here. Logic is out the window. And it's not a big deal, just curious if anybody had anybody better experience than I did with DE. Youthful exuberance is an amazing thing. Lol.

As long as he isn't going to hurt himself, I'm a firm believer in letting him make his own mistakes, and learning from it. Who know's he may like it. I hear tell there are people who actually don't think they are too damn big, too expensive, and useful as anything other than a "look at how cool I am, I got a Desert Eagle".

This thought first entered my mind when I first turned 21 as well. Luckily I researched online and learned that a .45 is nearly as effective, so I say turn him towards a 1911. You can still get a tacky high polished or chrome one to satisfy that youthful retardation...

Plus they are widely over used in videogames and movies to the point where I almost cringe every time I see one in games/movies.

If someone has something on their brain, no amount of logic is going to change their mind and if you do then they are always going to second guess their choice.

The DE is expensive to feed, huge, not practical for much of anything other than putting a smile one ones face. Its a gas gun and requires ammo on the hotter side.

They seam to move OK on the used market so once he figures it out on his own he should be able to move it and get something more inline with what you are recommending to him.

The biggest issue I have with even having one as a toy is the price of ammo. To shoot one at any volume you have to reload or have a lot of cash.

If he wants a "fun gun", it's hard to beat a DE.

The negative is the constant flow of people walking over to you, asking to shoot your expensive ammunition through your pistola.

They are jamomatics. That was my experience, plus heavy as hell.

Let him try to find one in stock, that should slow him down for awhile. IF he wants to be a bad *** with a semi auto just get something in 10MM.

I love mine. It is one of the most impractical and fun pistols I have (along with an AK pistol). I have always used ammo from DE's recommended list and have never had a FTF. I have had others shoot it without locking their wrist and it fails to cycle. Lock wrist and recoil at elbow.
