Sig 229 E2 Grip

I just bought a Sig 229 in 357 Sig, no rail. I see the one piece E2 grip being supposedly a worthwhile upgrade - seems similar to the old S&W one piece type that slipped over the frame. Has anyone bought & used? A selling point seems to be that it makes the grip smaller, and that's one thing I don't need. I have large "palm the basketball" hands.

Other than slimming the grip is there any real reason to buy these?

I have an E2 grip on my P226. It's just to make the grip smaller for people with smaller hands. I find it to be an excellent upgrade because I have smaller hands. It doesn't do anything else.

The E2 grip texture is nice and they have a nice palm swell. They are a little smaller than two piece. Unlike the 3rd gen SW grips they do not just slide on and have to be spread apart slightly to clear the de cocker on the left and trigger return spring on the right. Care should be taken when spreading then as I've heard if spread too much the grip will be loose. I had one that was a little loose on the frame. One thing I like is there are no grip screws to loosen and rust. I currently have them on a P229 and P220. You also need the tool (which spreads them) to remove them.

Have you considered Hogue G-10s? They are slightly smaller than the standard 2 piece plastic and the checkered offer great texture. They are over 100.00 though.

I have 1x lage hands, and the E2 fits perfect. Like the other guy's are saying. It has a good size palm swell, great texture and it does allow for a higher grip. All my Sigs are West German so on some I needed to change out the hammer strut. It definitely feels "better " IMO.

The regular two piece grip is on the smallish side for me, probably best to not switch to the one piece.

Kind of switching gears, aside from 229 magazines what other model mags fit this pistol, even with extensions or space fillers? I spend a few months a year in OR and can use standard capacity mags.

I traded into a M11-A1 with the P228 two piece grips. I bought and installed the E2 Grip kit and it improved my trigger pull tremendously. However I found that the E2 grip felt narrow in my hand and was rubbing the heck out of my side. I kept the mainspring spar from the E2 kit installed and went back to my 2 piece grips which have a more full grip for me.

I went with checkered walnut. A bit wider I presume, but I'm not going to CCW this gun. BTW, Numrich Arms has used 40 S&W barrels for $89.95. I bought one for use with the less expensive 40 cal ammo.

226 mags fit the 229. They hang about 1/2 inch below the grip but give you more capacity in a free state.

As others have said, the main differences is the E2 grip is thinner and has a rougher texture than stock. If you already find stock grips to be small, then I probably would not recommend the E2. You can always stipple stock grips if you want something with more texture.

I installed a set on a legacy slide P229 DAK 40. The grip is better for smaller hands and as mentioned - much more aggressive in texture. It also gives you a slight magwell funnel. I really like it. I also have a P227 Carry model that shipped from the factory with E2 grips.

If you decide to do it, you should get an E2 grip kit which will include the mainspring seat and strut you need for clearance, a new decock lever, and also the tool to remove the grips.
