    Blew up my Shield...(Update: Resolved!)

Update: Ammo vendor called. Claimed the problem was out of battery detonation. He said it was because the shell was blew out from the side and the magazine was blew out. Both signs of out of battery detonation. He recommended me to send the pistol back to S&W for inspection.

He sounded like a stand up guy. He said he will definitely take care of everything if it was the ammo's fault. He just needed more proof. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and will send the pistol back to S&W for inspection.

    ===============================================

Was just at ASR shooting my Shield with factory reman 9mm 147gr subsonic when it blew up. I was lucky enough to escape with minor flesh wounds. Got hit between the eyes and my thumb. Is the pistol salvageable? Should I send it to Smith and Wesson for repair?

Contact S&W. I'm sure they'll want to know how you blew up their gun. Use e-mail and include photos. Retaining the shell casing is a good thing.

    Good luck.

I'm glad you're okay. It looks like you got very lucky. "Factory reman" is an oxymoron. Which factory remanufactured this defective ammo for you?

You'll have to check your warranty to see if it's voided by the use of remanufactured ammo.

First off, glad you're o.k. Seems like minor injuries.

As far as your pistol, the frame doesn't seem to be damaged. I'm assuming the bottom of the mag blew out. How is the barrel? Any pics? In tact? I'd definitely send it back to S&W for a once over.

As far as the ammo goes, what brand? Range reloads or ?? Keep the box and contact the manufacturer and let them know what happened. Give them the lot # etc off the box.

And how did this happen? Was this a squib followed by a full power load? Or was this a double-charge?

And now for the PSA: ALWAYS wear mil-spec rated eye pro. The difference in price is minor and this is one of the reasons to invest in it.

I would contact the ammo manufacturer. I had something similar happen with a Tula round in a rifle. Contacted them and they paid for repairs to the gun.

Whose factory reloads, if you don't mind my asking?

Glad you weren't hurt more badly.

Wow, close call OP! Glad you weren't more seriously injured.

Yes, I'd be looking close at the reloads, and don't shoot any more of them until you get this figured out.

                  Best of luck.

Looks like reloads are not warranty exclusions, but there are warnings:

Ammo Warning, (Page 10 of Manual):
                    Warranty (Page 38 of Manual):

                      glad your eyes are OK
                      eye protection is so important...
it looks like brass and bullet are fixed too tight, powder explosion could not blow away bullet, broke brass wall.

Freedom munitions step wall looks like. Maybe a double charge. I'll pass on them

Yea the frame looks to be bowing out on one side. It's toast. Contact the ammo manufacturer first and see what they have to say about it.
