    RIA 1911 sights

Before anyone asked yes I searched

I am looking into getting some night sights for my RIA 1911 Tactical. I didn't realize how much I like 3 dots to line up until I shot my Sig 238 first then went to the 1911. It still shoots fine but I do keep it in my nightstand at night and if I ever had to use it like that I'd like a good sight picture.

Does anyone have experience with removing installing these. Sounds like my best bet is to take it to a gunsmith, which isn't a big deal. But who has reccommendations on actual sights.

I've been looking for sights for my RIA as well and will most likely be getting one of these two:

    Trijicon 1911 Sights
    TRUGLO Tritium Handgun Sight Set

I believe RIA sights have a dovetail groove at the front and a Novak cut at the rear

3 dot sights suck big time. The limited usefulness of tritum sights vs the width of the front sight keeps me from recommending any pistol night sights on the market.

On both of my RIA Tacticals, I installed a 10-8 U notch rear sight, the shortest and thinnest one they make and then matched it with a .095" wide Dawson FO front sight. The rear sight will take a little more fitting than usual since the dovetail is novak style instead of true novak specs.

I would install the rear sight first and then zero it with the stock front sight so that you can use the sight calculator and order the proper sight from Dawson.

50+ yards is easy peasy with this combo.

        Himurax,
I understand what you are saying but I'm looking for something useful in low light condtions, when I want an easy to find sight picture quickly. Otherwise, if I wanted a gun to reach out 50yds (which is impressive for the big fat slow 45 round the drop on these are crazy) I would go with what you reccommend.
However, thank you for your input.

Well we could have a 3+ hour argument on the value, or lack thereof, of night sights, but with .140 + wide front sights it is rather difficult to see the target past 7 yards since the front sight is blocking the view.

A lot of old time bullseye shooters loved the 50 yard competitions.

Truglo-TFX Pro. By far the best sights I have used for day/night. Fast acquisition and good illumination in all light conditions. As for obscuring the target....that seems obtuse. These are about the same size as a 6MOA RMR/red dot(at most), they've worked fine for me in IDPA.

I love a good discussion but this is not the thread. I'm just looking reccomendations on a set of night sights that will fit my gun. That is all.
              Thanks

I had Trijicon HD pit on. Had to have slide machined for the rear but got best of both worlds. Daylight the rear is black with a fiber front and in the dark it's a three dot glow.

Without going into the issue of the value of night sights, let me mention one issue with the Rock Island sights. I have a Rock Tactical, about 5 years old, that has the newer true Novak cut. When I went to replace the OEM black on black sights with white dot for my eyes, I found that I could not get the rear sight out. Even after removing the set screw. No matter what I did, the sight would not budge. I ended up taking a hacksaw and carefully splitting the rear sight so that it could be removed. There have been reports from other peope who had the same problem.
The front sight came out without a problem.

My RIA tactical is at Armscor in Nevada now for warrant work to replace the rear sight. I asked if they could replace with factory 3 dot set up if they have it. I will post what their repsonse is once they start work.

Right now it has the plain factory rear and I created a divot in the front sight and filled in with testors white modeling paint. It works well on the cheap.

Just know that there are some RIA models that have a Novak STYLE cut but they are in fact NOT an EXACT Novak cut.
