first world problem (new range report with possible solution)

I ordered a P220 22LR conversion kit from Sig. It came in yesterday and I was very excited to put it on my P220 frame. That's when I noticed a giant scratch just in front of the rear sight and an attempt to cover it with black ink of some kind. The scratch looks like the result of mounting the rear sight and someone slipped with the tool.

I know I know. Put 5000 rounds through it and report back.

Just a little annoyed with the large scratch and the crappy ink job.

On a used one I’d say suck it up. On a new one I’d ask Sig WTF. Ymmv.

      I don't know why....

For some reason the practice of converting calibers off one pistol frame while sounding good never seems to work in real life practice.

A 1911 .45acp with a .22LR conversion. 99.9 % of the time when you see one for sale the conversion kit looks unfired.

The HK pistol, Number 4, I think, 1980s, from HK factory, one pistol frame that can handle a slide from a .22lr, a 32acp and a .380 acp. A great pistol, just not very popular.

      Long guns same way:
Late 70s, U.S. Military came up with .22LR gizmo to install in a real AR for reasons unknown. I know a handful of guys including me who bought the conversion 22LR widget and never used it. For shotguns, there is this gizmo that looks like a Forester case gage. Once inserted in the breach the shooter now loads a single .22LF cartridge into it, closes the shotgun breach and now the shotgun fires a single .22LR cartridge. This idea gets recirculated every 15 years or so.

I wouldn't worry too much about that scratch near the rear sight. I know I guy with a similar blemish on his P220. The scratch made the bullets go faster so it's kind of a win-win situation.

        Brand new?

Personally, if I'm paying brand new $$, I expect brand new condition.

Either they make it right by:
        1. ..sending me something gratis worth 20-30% of the price,
        2. ...giving me 20-30% of my money back.
        or
        3. ...sending me a new non-marred item.

        Their choice.

Something like a spare mag(s), etc seems about right.

Oh good idea. I can always call support and see what happens.

I'll post the picture of the scratch later.

I called Sig customer service on Friday afternoon. CSR Olivia was surprised to hear about the scratched new slide and asked for pictures. I sent her these:

Maybe I got lucky but all the 22 kits ive used has been perfect. I had the gsg 1911 kit that fit my ao1911 decently. Shot a little high but never gave me issue except the occasional ftf caused by the 22 being a rimfire. I sold the kit and the 1911 because I wanted to move away from the 45.

Currently I have the cmmg 22 kit for ar15. So far that kit has been perfect too. The only issue I had was cause by resting the rifle on the magazine. My gf did that because the rifle was to heavy and it caused the spent casing to get jammed inside instead of ejecting. Took me a while to figure the cause of this as I shot it standing so everytime I fired it, it was perfect but everytime my gf fired it sitting it jammed lol.

It isn't about whether the kits work or not, rather for some reason the kits just get used.

Olivia offered to take the kit back and either have it refinished or send me a new one. I'm fine with either.

People complain about Sig's customer service, but so far I've had nothing but good things to say about Sig's customer service.

I got my conversion kit back earlier this week. It is a new one. I didn't get anything else for my troubles. Maybe I should have asked for something.

Anyways, I greased the rails and took it to the range last night. I brought 50 rounds each of Federal bulk, Remington Golden turd, CCI Blazer, and Winchester M22.

I tried M22 first. I loaded 4 mags and proceeded to fire it like how I shoot my dad's Ruger Mk II. Except....it doesn't shoot like a Mk II. Every single round was a light strike. I needed to use DA's second strike function to fire most of the 40 rounds. And even if it fired, there's failure to eject and failure to load on just about all of them. I pretty much hand cycled through all 40 rounds and the hammer dropped 80 times to fire those 40 rounds.

Next up was Golden Turd. I take back half of what I said about this junk. A good number of them actually cycled correctly and fired on first strike. They are fairly accurate too.

Then I moved on to Remington bulk. These things suck. They have the same problem as the M22. I hand cycled through most of them and just about every single round required second strike.

Last was Blazer. These guys have been sitting in my stock for a while, maybe 15 years. They did not have the power to cycle the gun. Most failed to eject. I had to hand cycle through most of them. A lot of them needed second strike as well.

When the gun worked, it was very pleasant and very very accurate. I managed to get through a mag of Golden Turd and most of them grouped into the size of a quarter at 7 yards.

Next time I will try Aguila and Armscor rounds. These worked quite well in my Beretta 21A where the above 4 types of ammo would not. I hope they will also work in this 22 conversion slide.
