Gun storage and humidity issues

I've used RIG gun grease for 50 years and I've never had problems with rust. RIG is a calcium sulfonate complex grease, specially formulated to inhibit rust. It is now made by Birchwood Casey and should be available at many local gunshops. I use RIG for long term storage of my guns and have been happy with the results. Check it out: http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleanin...prod31842.aspx -
Hey man I had same problem. I live in south eastern AZ and people don't understand how humid it is here with the monsoons and to make matters worse the house I'm renting has a swamp cooler. I took standard weather stripping from Home Depot and sealed safe with that. I have to hold it closed to lock it but it's better than rusty guns. I also added the biggest Golden Rod amazon had and between both of them the issue is fixed.Comment

Do you have electricity nearby? Try a Golden Rod, Its basically a heater. If you can keep the inside warmer than the outside, condensation won't form inside. Breakfree makes a "preservation"version of LP made for storage.Comment

Seems to me you could:
1. Seal the safe, lock in local humidity and keep it low with golden rod, dessicant, boveda, etc.
2. Grease the **** out of that firearm - RIG, cosmoline, boeshield, wax, vacuum pack, seal or otherwise seal it from humidity
3. dehumidify the entire garage.
I think that pretty much sums up your options.Last edited by adamjay; 09-11-2017, 11:24 PM.'The greatest fine art of the future will be the making of a comfortable living from a small piece of land.'

Eva dry's work really well in case you don't have electrical access inside the safe. They are reusable as well, just plug them in over night and it's back in the safe. I use this in one of my cabinets that doesn't have electrical access and it works perfectly.BlipComment

That would be ideal if I lived in Vancouver but moving 1600 miles to control rust seems a little drastic to me.
I've got a flat roofed garage (insulated roof and walls) that without cooling during the hot months the temps get high enough to melt candles. Can't afford to run ac to cool it so the cooler stays.
Besides I've got other exposed metal items like my table saw that haven't rusted in 20 years so I figure I can control the long gun exposure for the two years they have to be in the garage.
This is the first year I've had AC in the house and all my firearms are still in good shape after 30 years what with running a swamp cooler 12-24 hrs/day for 9 months a year.
My oldest varmint rifle shows some patina on the barrel but like I said it's been in a swamp cooled environment for 30 years. That and it's been used and abused during that time period so the patina looks good next to the scarffed up stock.
I think I'll try the door seal, diseccant, anticorrosion grease/oil, golden rod and monitor things closely for the time being.

Also look into Damp Rid, a chemical dehumidifier used in RVs. Should be available at Home Depot, or Amazon. You will need to replenish it periodically, but it does work. This, plus a golden rod, plus weatherstripping should have you all set. Good luck.

Like a couple others have recommended, I also recommend Eva-Dry. I have a safe about six feet from my shower. Eva-Dry has worked perfectly for me for a couple years. Just monitor the color of the beads, and plug it in overnight when they turn purple or pink.Comment

Go to Homes Depot and get some silicone weatherstripping for the safe door. Cover any unused safe mounting holes and purchase a couple of those outlet rechargable safe dryers. Mine go months without needing to be recharged." Safes all sealed, stuck another pond of diseccant in it until I can dehydrate the two ponds of spent diseccant, golden rod cooking the safe, mounting holes have bolts ,washers and rubber grommets thru them.
Gotta coat the rifles and see how it goes.
