    S & W M & P Trigger Question

Bought an S & W M & P, 4" barrel, no manual safety version. Installed an Apex trigger, striker block and striker spring. I've installed a few for friends previously and am fairly familiar with the gun's internals, my question concerns the "candy cane" trigger bar and the striker block - I'm supposing the only folks interested are those who have experimented a bit.

The loop or "candy cane" on the trigger bar moves the sear and one method of dropping the sear sooner in the trigger pull is to open the loop a bit. The Apex website demonstrates how this is done, occasionally on a trigger change the new trigger can "bottom out" before the sear drops the striker.

The trigger bar also moves the striker block out of the way allowing the striker/firing pin to hit the primer. So my question is ...

Can the loop be opened up too far, allowing the striker to drop before the striker block is engaged and moved out of the blocking position?

I realize opening the loop increases over travel and reset. But it also reduces take up and I can see from the mechanics take up could be eliminated. I like the trigger as I have it set up, with the loop opened just a bit, a touch of take up and some overtravel. But I'm wondering at what point, if any, the loop drops the sear before the striker is moved and how that limits the trigger being adjusted.

Call Apex and tell them what you are trying to do,they are very helpful and will walk you through it. Helped me in a similar scenario where the s&w pc us wasn't engaging the fss. I ended up just swapping out the USB for an Apex.

In theory, yes if you open up the candy cane enough it will lift the sear before the block is disengaged. Exactly how much is anyone's guess. These guns were made with pretty loose tolerances.

I prefer a long take up on my pistols but if you want to shorten it I'd recommend using a set screw in the frame to limit how far forward the trigger will move. Increasing over travel will hurt accuracy (at least it does for me)
