What are these machining marks on my Shield?

I initially thought some type of balancing device, but saw too many that were exactly the same. I've heard S&W board members refer to barrel versions by the number of dots machines into the lug area.

It's probably someone at the factory that tells his buddy, "I'm gonna put some divots inside the frame to mess with people. Make them wonder what they mean. Lololol...."
