I am thinking about purchasing one. This would be the most expensive weapon I would own. For those that own one, what are your thoughts?

Sig Sauer P229

Are you talking a new or a used gun?
I would not buy an early P226 with the Early Address on it. They are known for the slide rails cracking and breaking off. SIG will not acknowledge this design defect, and will not repair, or replace guns with this problem.
The P226 frame was redesigned by SIG (without admitting it to anyone) to strength the frame where they were cracking.
But I have a problem with any Company that does not admit it made a mistake, does not make good on it's obvious mistakes, and acts like it has never made a mistake. -
They didn't need to acknowledge it, those guns were rated for less than 12.5k rounds, and most of them reached their marks. The scalloping was designed to help with reliability for when dirt gets onto the rails. Are you talking a new or a used gun?

PS: back on subject OP should stay away from CA approved Sigs, look towards the Market Place even if you have to pay a bit more.Comment

How does this pertain to the 229?Are you talking a new or a used gun?

OP, what caliber are you looking at? What do you seek to do with this? CCW, target, defense?
Your prior handguns are they striker fire or DA/SA?Comment

My mistake, I thought the post said P226.
There are several P229s in my family, and I can actually shoot them very accurately. But for the reason I noted above, I won't personally own or recommend that anyone buy any SIG product, because SIG does not stand behind their products, regardless of what they might publish in their ads.
My Uncle's P226 had less than 200 round fired in it when the frame cracked in two places. It still looks new and unused, because it is. This P226 was fired very little before the frame failed, and it was stored in the original box, in a safe when not taken out to shot. It was only used as a target gun, not a daily carry or duty gun. Never dropped and no reason for the frame to break. SIG claimed that it was very worn in appearance from use, and tried to keep it without compensating my Uncle because they said it was worthless, and my Uncle should not want it back because it was worthless.
I believe that they tried to keep it because the gun itself is proof that the design is/was defective. It's been examined/inspected by several gunsmith's of note, and they agree that the gun was defective, and the failure of the frame was not due to use. Still SIG, says that there is nothing wrong with the design or manufacturing of that gun, and the failure of the frame is not the reason that they redesigned the exact parts of the frame that failed.Last edited by Heretodaygonetomorrow; 08-12-2017, 9:25 PM.Comment

Whether in 9mm, or .40sw and even .357 Sig - all my P229's in those calibers have been accurate out of the box with zero issues and very easy to shoot. These are from the 90's with legacy slides with my SAS 2's being more recent models.
If you look in the classifieds I'd suggest picking up a non CA MODEL, with non of that LCI b.s. and I've seen good deals on blued P229's in the $7-800 range in excellent condition.
My pick would be .40SW in a P229, and you can't go wrong with a 9mm either nevertheless.Comment

Agreed. Strongly recommend.
I was an early purchaser back in 93, none of that CA BS back then.
Over the years I added Hogue grips, Heine straight 8 tritium sights and the short reset mod. Picked up a .357 Sig barrel as well, 40SW mags work for .357 Sig
